Meet Matt Long | Tea-Enthusiast – Adventurer – Artist/Entertainer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Long and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Navigating work-life balance as an artist can be a delicate dance. Between crafting emails to various venues and eagerly awaiting responses to fill your performance calendar, it’s easy to find yourself consumed by the music world. The key, I believe, lies in meticulously carving out time within your day to respond to emails, nurture your creativity, and engage in activities beyond music that spark joy. While music remains my passion, I relish the opportunity to engage in conversations that transcend the realm of melodies and harmonies. I find solace in exploring the natural world, whether it’s venturing outdoors for a breath of fresh air or embarking on a rejuvenating journey to a new destination. Amidst the relentless pursuit of musical excellence, I make a conscious effort to step away from the grind, reminding myself of the profound reasons why I embarked on this artistic path.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The tapestry of my life has been intricately woven with threads of music, theater, and the unwavering pursuit of creativity. My childhood was a symphony of melodies, harmonies, and the thrill of stepping onto the stage. These formative experiences instilled in me a deep-seated passion for the arts. However, the path to my dreams has been paved with challenges and setbacks.
After graduating with a degree in music, I was fortunate to secure a fulfilling job as a music teacher. However, the stability of this position was short-lived. With a newfound determination to pursue my musical aspirations, I pivoted to a career in education, pursuing a master’s degree in education. The classroom offered valuable teaching experiences and a chance to ignite the passion for music in young minds. However, the challenge of building a music program from the ground up proved to be more daunting than anticipated. The rollercoaster of emotions in pursuing my dreams has been exhilarating yet humbling, with moments of creative fulfillment and days of self-doubt.
In the midst of these challenges, I’ve held onto the words of Jim Carrey, who said, “You can fail at what you don’t want, so might as well take a chance on doing what you love.” This powerful sentiment has fueled my perseverance, reminding me that pursuing my passion is a journey worth taking, even amidst the inevitable ups and downs.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend is coming to Nashville, and I’m planning a weekend filled with fun and memorable experiences. To start our journey we’ll begin with a visit to Hattie B’s, a Nashville staple known for its hot chicken. Then, we’ll quench our thirst with a refreshing beer at Jackalope Brewing, a local favorite with a wide selection of craft brews. As an added bonus, my best friend’s cousin happens to be the head brewer there! Later that night, we’ll hit up broadway. The mecca of live country music and honky tonk bars.
On Saturday, we’ll indulge in a hearty breakfast at Biscuit Love or The Pancake Pantry, two Nashville gems that are renowned for their delectable biscuits and pancakes. Afterward, we’ll embark on a scenic hike through Radnor Lake, a natural oasis amidst the bustling city. Radnor Lake offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
In the evening, we’ll immerse ourselves in the heart of Nashville’s music scene. We’ll catch a live performance at either The Bluebird Cafe, The Listening Room, or Rudy’s Jazz Room, each venue offering a unique and intimate atmosphere for enjoying the city’s rich musical heritage.
Sunday brings a laid-back agenda. We’ll relax and soak up some sun on Percy Priest Lake, a sprawling recreational haven. And if the stars align, I might just be performing a show in town, and I’ll be more than happy to invite my best friend and his wife to witness my original music.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d say my friends and family have been the biggest supporters of my dreams. Although, it hasn’t been easy I’ve been encouraged to keep pursuing my dreams. My friends and family are always eager to hear about my musical journey and what’s next for me. I’m so grateful that the people I hold close, care about my success.
