We had the good fortune of connecting with Lois Barth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lois, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Life is Always Talking, Make Sure You’re Listening.” – LOIS-ism

LOIS-ism stands for Lessons, Opportunities, Insights, and Solutions.

I have about 300 of them. They are different quotes I’ve come up with in my work, and just being an observer of life, my own and others, and my professional training.

This one is one of my favorites and most popular amongst my clients and groups I speak to because it’s all about being present, observing your own and other’s lives, and extracting the lessons; the things that keep showing up in your life. What can you learn from them? How do they make you feel? What needs to be shifted?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always loved both the creative and transformational arts. From an early age whether I was acting, singing, doing stand-up comedy, arts education, storytelling, and one-woman shows or being a healthcare practitioner to transitioning into my work as a speaker coach, and author, I’ve been fascinated by how to integrate creativity into personal growth and professional development. The two go hand in hand. One comedian said it best, “Comedy = Tragedy + Time. If you can take a challenging situation in life, and find both the humor and the humanity you can transform it for yourself and others into a way to heal and to grow. One of the things that set me apart as a speaker is the lens I look through life. My brand, Courage to SPARKLE, is about how you use what makes you different, your superpowers but also your life lessons to shine bright, share your gifts, and make a difference. I call that Courage to SPARKLE. Now more than ever we need that. The world is so divided and on dimmers. But it takes courage to do that. Whether it’s our internal negative self-talk, or experiencing obstacles in the world. My work integrates stories, metaphors, body-centered, and exercises that allow people to shift their thinking and behavior and as a result, enhance the quality of their life. My 4C Methodology; curious, compassion, connection, and courage allow us to shift our perspective along with adopted tactical tools to allow you to sustain these changes. I had my challenges of negative self-talk, an eating disorder, and many other things, but when I adopted my LOIS-ism, “Move From Criticism To Curiosity,” so much changed. My work is rooted in brain science as well so while it’s really fun, creative, and interactive, it also has practical and powerful applications.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I truly believe that if you’re going to show someone a great time, you need to surrender “your agenda,” and be in their world. What I love to do is irrelevant if it’s not the person’s jam. So let’s say I’m with a friend who’s a fellow thriftista like me who loves to go to vintage and thrift shops, I’d be her personal shopper. I’d find out what looks she wanted to create, and I’d run around putting together outfits for her. If she had a love affair with architecture I’d sign us up for an architecture tour based on what part of history is her favorite for architecture. If ethnic food was her jam, I’d find out which are the most fun ones with the best food and I’d make reservations. If she was into being pampered I’d make two appointments for foot massages at my favorite day spa and we’d have the whole day to stream, sauna, and yack away. If she had certain interests and synergies with different people, I’d arrange a group dinner so she could meet other fabulous people like herself.

I live in NYC so there’s NEVER a shortage of super cool interesting things to do.

But if you really want to celebrate someone you MUST be in THEIR world, not yours! Most people don’t realize that!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my piece to my parents; Ben and Edie. They were the the embodiment of the 3Ls of an inspired life; learning, loving, and laughter. Their commitment to all three was demonstrated daily in their marriage and their parenting. Both their passion for viewing life as the ultimate classroom in which to grow and their deep interest in elevating those around them is what stands as their legacy. While they are no longer on the physical plane, they will remain with me always.
