Meet Lisa Monger | Fitness Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Monger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over time, my approach to work-life balance has undergone a significant transformation. In the past, my work was physically taxing, and the demands of the job left me feeling drained. The prospect of heading to work used to be accompanied by a sense of dread, both mentally and physically.
However, as my career has evolved, so has my perception of work-life balance. I’ve intentionally shifted towards roles that are less physically demanding, allowing me to prioritize my well-being. Now, I find myself in a position where the boundary between work and personal life is more defined.
Today, I approach my work with a healthier mindset, understanding the importance of striking a balance between professional responsibilities and personal fulfillment. The emphasis is not solely on the quantity of work but also on its quality, allowing me to enjoy a more harmonious and fulfilling work-life balance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career in fitness is a testament to the fusion of my love for dance and the determination to regain my health after the birth of my two children. What sets me apart is not only my personal transformation but the realization that fitness should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial constraints. It began as a hobby, driven by the observation that many black women, much like myself, faced challenges affording expensive gym memberships and lacked guidance on where to begin.
Embarking on this path wasn’t without its challenges. Balancing the roles of a mother, pursuing a personal training certification, and working a full-time job demanded a Herculean effort. It required meticulous time management, relentless dedication, and the unwavering support of my family, who graciously shared the responsibilities of maintaining our home.
The journey taught me invaluable lessons. I discovered the power of meeting people where they are—recognizing that everyone’s fitness journey is unique. This realization became the cornerstone of my approach, emphasizing empathy and understanding in my interactions with clients.
What I’m most proud of is not just my personal achievements but the desire to be a meaningful part of others’ journeys. My goal is to make fitness inclusive and relatable, breaking down barriers and empowering individuals to embrace their unique paths to wellness.
In essence, my brand and story are about resilience, inclusivity, and the belief that fitness is a journey, not a destination. I want the world to know that, together, we can overcome challenges and celebrate the diverse narratives that make each fitness journey extraordinary.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For an unforgettable week in Memphis, I’d start the day with a caffeine boost at the Morning Grind Coffee Shop, setting the tone for our adventures. Mornings would be reserved for invigorating runs at Shelby Farms, soaking in the scenic beauty and energizing ourselves for the day ahead.
The cultural heart of the city awaits us at the Civil Rights Museum, a powerful and moving experience that delves into the history of the civil rights movement. It’s a must-visit to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s rich heritage.
For a unique fitness experience, we’d join a spin class at Zen Studio, combining a high-energy workout with a sense of community. After breaking a sweat, we’d refuel at Central Bar B Que, savoring the authentic flavors of Memphis-style barbecue—a culinary delight not to be missed.
No trip to Memphis is complete without a stroll down the iconic Beale Street. The vibrant atmosphere, live music, and eclectic mix of bars and clubs make it a quintessential Memphis experience.
Lunchtime would be a treat at City Silo, offering a diverse menu of wholesome and delicious options. The afternoon calls for relaxation, and what better way to unwind than with a rejuvenating massage at Midtown Massage, soothing tired muscles and preparing us for more adventures.
Throughout the week, we’d explore the local scene, discovering hidden gems and meeting interesting people who make Memphis truly special. From its cultural landmarks to the dynamic food scene and vibrant entertainment options, Memphis has something for everyone. By the end of the week, my best friend would not only have experienced the city’s highlights but also gained a true appreciation for the spirit and warmth that defines Memphis.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
