Meet Kevin Wurm | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Wurm and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks are necessary for any career/life advancement. Camille Seaman, an amazing photographer once said, “The cave you fear to enter, holds the treasure you seek.” Not letting fear control our actions allows us to enter the dark and uncertain cave for the treasure in life we seek. I’ve taken quite a few risks in my career. A major risk of mine is when I left my salaried job and took a Summer internship in Washington DC with Reuters in 2023. Although there were a lot of firsts during the internship, I took a risk, quickly adapted and ultimately grew exponentially.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love all types of disciplines of photography, but I focus on journalism, portraiture, fine art and real estate photography. I got where I am today through consistency by never giving up on my dream of being the photographer I want to be. Getting to where I am today has not been easy. There have been many times where I’ve questioned if this career were possible. But through consistency, taking risks and getting comfortable being uncomfortable, I’ve been blessed enough to be in situations and environments to meet people that believed in me and gave me opportunities to grow as a photographer. I wasn’t able to attend art school as it was too expensive. Where my career took a massive upswing was at a workshop in upstate New York called the Eddie Adams workshop. It is a free merit-based workshop that chooses 50 students and 50 professional photographers from around the world. In 2023 I applied and was surprisingly accepted. Here is where I met amazing people that have helped guide me in my career. Since then, I did a summer internship in DC with Reuters and have worked with publications such as New York Times, Reuters, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and by-lines in publications across the country and world.
I’ve learned so many lessons throughout my journey so far. On tough days I listen to motivational speeches to reignite that fire. To get something you’ve never had, you have to do things you’ve never done. Anything is possible if you want it bad enough. Ray Lewis once said, “Before anything great is really achieved, your comfort zone must be disturbed!” On a daily basis, challenge your comfort zone. Reach out to that editor for coffee you’re afraid to talk to, apply to the workshop you want to attend and tackle anything that brings up those nerves, whatever it may be. Denzel Washington also said a lot of things that have resonated with me, “Without commitment, you’ll never start. But more importantly without consistency, you’ll never finish. Ease is a greater threat to progress than hardship… If you don’t fail, you’re not even trying.”

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First is my family, but I wouldn’t be where I am as a photographer without the community and people that I met at the Eddie Adams Workshop in upstate New York which has since become family. Until my attendance, I didn’t really have a community of photographers that shared the passion of photography with me. There are so many people that I would like to shoutout. Idris Soloman, Corinne Perkins, Brent Lewis, Jackie Molloy, Andy Scott, Sara Terry, Nancy Borowick, Brooke LaValley, Maye-E Wong, Steve and Betty Francis and so many more! They have all taken me under their wing, shared information and have given me opportunities that have helped me along my journey. Forever grateful to them all and they deserve ALL the credit and recognition.
