We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaitlyn Holliman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaitlyn, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing about the photography industry I think outsiders are likely unaware of is everything that takes place before and after the photo session. Before becoming a photographer and after when upgrading or making changes to your gear there is a large amount of research, comparing, and deciding for what gear will be best for you. After purchasing you have to learn the gear and exactly how to use the gear to the best of its abilities in all situations. Photographers also have to create contracts, invoices, timelines, and questionnaires to give the best experience for clients. Once you’ve educated yourself on gear use and the paperwork you can start sessions.
After the sessions you begin the culling, editing, and delivery process which are all time consuming themselves. New photographers have to learn what editing style they like and how to best use that editing style to keep consistent work for clients to see. The after process takes way longer than the session itself. You often hear “Your camera takes good photos” or “All you have to do is click a button” but so much more is put into the process before and after that is costly and more time consuming than the session itself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is shown in all of my photo sessions. I love to give meaningful candid moments. I strive for my sessions and weddings to be sentimental moments the families and couples can enjoy rather than simply posed photos. I enjoy creating memories while getting those great shots. To get to where I am professionally today I put in a large amount of hours researching, learning, and experiencing the photography world. Education and practice are a huge part of perfecting your skill. Being successful in a small business takes a lot of trial and error and consistency, even when it’s hard keep practicing and you can get to where you want to be.
Some lessons I have learned along the way are to not rush, you cannot become a professional overnight. I’ve learned not to compare myself to others. Instead of comparing I found the style I best liked and ran with it.
Something I’d love the world to know about my business is that photo sessions can be fun, you can have genuine laughs and moments with loved ones. That even those individuals who dread photos can enjoy the session! Something I’d love the world to know about my story or their story is to not give up, consistency is key! Every small business owner had to find what worked best for them, even if it wasn’t something the entire world noticed. Everyone has to take time to find what works best for them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many options for great experiences in Nashville and Clarksville TN. Some of my favorite places to go are the Game Terminal and the City Forum. Both places have settings fit for adults and children! They are also great to be at for multiple hours – they have food, drinks, and games. For more of an outdoor experience The Narrows of the Harpeth is a beautiful location to walk trails, see an overlook, and be on the river!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My business would not be where it is without the support of my family, friends, and community. My family encouraged me to follow my dream and my community has used word of mouth as a great tool for my small businesses. Another huge credit to my success is the Rhinestone Wedding Chapel, Mrs. Jennifer. She has trusted me with capturing weddings, vow renewals, and elopements for her chapel. Working at the chapel has improved my skills all around in the photography industry.
