Meet Justin Dodson, PhD, LPC | Mental Health Therapist & Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Dodson, PhD, LPC and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, how does your business help the community?
I am the visionary behind a mental health consulting and private practice. I believe my practice helps the community and world by helping men restructure their thoughts and develop skills one session at a time. This is so important because as a man who believes in the mental health of other men, I carry the burden of standing in the gap because it’s necessary. Men deserve so much more than we are allowed to from a societal standpoint, culturally, and racially. The work that my practice does provides men with the opportunity to gain perspective & learn tools so they can better impact their communities currently and generations to come. If men can regulate their emotions, practice vulnerability, learn healthy communication, practice assertiveness, they can be exactly who they deserve and desire to be.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am most excited about being exactly where I am supposed to be in life & investing into my practice, I am always humbled when men make contact as a first step toward change or when organizations seek services. I’ve been a therapist since 2012. I got where I am by re-defining my relationship with success, focusing on myself and not measuring my success to my counterparts or social media influencers. Id would say that I continue to operate from an old school mentality. Running a business to be profitable has not been easy, in fact, being an entrepreneur in a business that people assume you’re supposed to be a push over because you are in the helping profession is challenging. Additionally, being a business man with clinical skills creates sustainability. I overcame challenges by showing up daily, recognizing that I need time to dream, create and hold my boundaries and enjoy what I am doing. I’d like people to know that I love what I do, I believe in people having the right fit for a provider so I try connecting people with other clinicians when we prove not to be a good fit.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are going to eat breakfast, get tacos, breathe fresh air, and shop. I think all of my friends spectacular and connecting people is beautiful. Garden Brunch Café or The Liquor store for breakfast, Char for lunch and street tacos.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many to name. Jessica Ornsby of A & O Law, Victoria Morgan with Havens Hallow Interior, Bewendi Bobb, Erica Mayo, Chenobia Webster-Hill. All of these powerful black women have shaped my perspective about success and business and I thank each and every one of them.
