We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennie Pyfferoen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
In my line of work, I have to be able to nurture families to step away from the idea of curated photography that is promoted heavily on social media. I have to be able to show them the memories they will miss later, and be vulnerable enough to let me capture them in a raw and real way. On top of that, family films are not a term many people are googling for. The Marketing side of this business is like the Wild West, but I have loved it and achieved much success! I love showing families how amazing their real lives are, even when it feels messy and hard.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For the first 6 years of my 15 years of business, I did posed newborn photography. I just fell into it, I never really stopped to think about the purpose of it. In 2017, I discovered family films and was forever changed. 8 years later, I think I was absolutely destined to do this work. It has deep meaning and purpose in our current culture especially. But shifting from the extremes was very challenging and meant losing many clients. But because I lost my mom right after my wedding, I know how much families will cherish the sounds and visuals that videography brings later. How much they will miss the REAL photos of their family members over the posed photo of them on a blanket at sunset.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to a sweet spot in Franklin TN, called Elroy. It’s a charming little coffee shop with lots of windows and plays worship music. After that, we would walk through Radnor Lake park for a little hike. Then, we would drive around for an hour seeing the area. We would end up at my home in the country laying on the hammock. Each day, we would visit a fun restaurant and hike a nature park and I would have to take her to my CrossFit gym for a little sweat. At my house, we would sauna and cold plunge and chat deep conversations.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe my whole career to Courtney Holmes who developed family films in the first place. She also has an amazing platform, The Filming Life Academy, where you can learn to become a family filmmaker. I have been apart of the Academy since 2017!
