Meet Heather Montgomery | Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It was by pure accident! I started a blog in 2009 as an accountability journal as I trained for my first half marathon. I had watched some friends run the runDisney full marathon, and was so inspired. As a Disney lover, I knew I wanted my first half to be there. I signed up, starting writing, and kept running! I signed up for more races, and realized people were actually reading my blog. So i kept going until I started getting offered brand deals, which I didn’t even know was a thing! After a couple of years, I decided to rebrand to more of a lifestyle blog since I had a lot more to say then just to talk about running, although runDisney remained a HUGE part of my life!
Running With Sass changed to Through Heather’s Looking Glass, and I eventually started posting on social media. When I saw that Instagram was the next big thing, I quickly pivoted (which you have to be able to do in this business!) to posting more on social media. I kept growing and working with brands, and the rest is history! The name of my platforms, Through Heather’s Looking Glass, still has a nod to Disney (Alice in Wonderland) to keep me true to my roots, but I knew I wanted to be able to share knowledge, a laugh, and encouragement with women from all over. I think being relatable and true to myself has worked in my favor, and now my business is my “baby”, and I wouldn’t change the path I have gone down for anything!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It was definitely not easy. Consistency is key! When a lot of other creators were giving up because they weren’t growing fast enough, I kept on going, hoping it would pay off in the end, and it did! I love encouraging other creators to keep going, that success doesn’t happen overnight for most people. I learned that there will always be people out there rooting for you, and also against you. You have to learn to drown out the noise, and the temptation to be someone you aren’t. People want authenticity, and I try my best to give that in my content, recommendations, stories. I don’t always get it right, but I think the fact that I show my “human-ness” and that I make mistakes makes me more relatable to people. I want people to feel safe and comfortable on my platforms and blog, and know that my inbox is always open. Sharing my struggles, tips nd ideas is something I thrive on. I don’t want people to make the same mistakes I did!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my BFF was coming to Knoxville, we would hit the ground running and visit downtown for the amazing farmer’s market, then eat at Tupelo Honey or Babalu. Then we would go bowling at Maple Hall, shop on Gay Street, and have drinks at the rooftop bar at the Embassy Suites hotel. We would also drive a little bit into the mountains and go to Pigeon Forge to visit my favorite, Dollywood, and eat at Song and Hearth at the DreamMore Resort. We would probably hit up The Island for shopping and dancing fountains, as well as getting some day passes at Camp Margaritaville for the lazy river. we would eat at Huck Finns, hike in Gatlinburg, and take the chair lift up to Anakeesta for drinks and live music. Let’s go!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband Bobby, for sure. He has supported me every step of the way, encouraged me to keep going when things seemed too difficult, and never let me give up on myself. He is my biggest cheerleader, and I probably would have given up a long time ago if not for him.
