We had the good fortune of connecting with Dex Morton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dex, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because my passion for creating has been ingrained in me since I was 6 or 7 years old. The act of creating brings me immense joy, and it has been a consistent source of fulfillment throughout my life. I find solace and excitement in the process of bringing my ideas to life through various artistic mediums.
Beyond personal satisfaction, sharing my creative gift is a deeply rewarding aspect of my artistic journey. Witnessing the positive impact my creations have on others, and knowing that it might inspire the next generation of creators, adds a profound layer of meaning to my work. The idea that my art can resonate with someone, evoke emotions, or even spark curiosity in the creative process is a powerful motivator.
One of the most gratifying experiences for me is when someone gets excited about my art and expresses genuine interest in understanding the process behind it. The opportunity to share my knowledge and techniques with others not only fosters a sense of community but also contributes to the growth and enrichment of the creative collective. I believe that by nurturing and sharing our creative gifts, we create a positive ripple effect that extends beyond ourselves, fostering a culture of inspiration and innovation.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is simply being myself. I’ve never sought to emulate others or conform to a mold; I embrace my unique perspective and individuality. My authenticity is a key element of what I bring to the table. I share my gift with others and tell my story in the hopes that it may inspire them to become the best versions of themselves and more.
My professional journey has been far from easy, marked by challenges that required dedication, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning. I didn’t shy away from the difficulties; instead, I faced them head-on by studying, acquiring new skills, and refusing to give in to the temptation to quit. I placed my bet on myself and pushed beyond my comfort zone, recognizing that growth often happens in the discomfort.
A fundamental lesson I’ve learned, and continue to learn, is the importance of perseverance. Not quitting, being patient with myself, and trusting the process have been crucial principles that guide me through both the highs and lows of my journey. The creative process, much like life, unfolds gradually, and embracing this reality has been instrumental in my development.
I draw inspiration from a rich tapestry of memories, ranging from the simple joys of hanging out with family to the immersive experience of watching movies and the fascination with stylish footwear. These elements from my past form the foundation of my creativity, infusing my work with a genuine and relatable essence.
In essence, my story is one of self-discovery, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity. I want the world to know that I am not just an artist but a storyteller, sharing not only my creations but the lessons and experiences that have shaped me. I invite others to embrace their uniqueness, bet on themselves, and trust the process of becoming the best version of who they are meant to be. This is me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
During our week-long exploration of Nashville, my homies and I would dive into the city’s unique sneaker culture by visiting local shoe spots, immersing ourselves in the vibrant and eclectic styles. We’d savor the local flavors at mom-and-pop gems like the Flat Tire Diner for comforting meals and indulge in the renowned hot chicken at a local joint. To elevate our experience, we’d take in the cityscape from a rooftop bar, enjoying panoramic views and signature cocktails. Delving into the cultural tapestry, we’d explore the rich musical history at the National Museum of African American Music and attend art events to witness the city’s dynamic creative scene. To add a dash of fun, Game Terminal would be on the agenda, offering a mix of classic and modern arcade games paired with drinks. With a blend of local experiences, culinary delights, cultural immersion, and a rooftop rendezvous, our Nashville trip would be a memorable journey of exploration and camaraderie. But depending on the mood it will be chill
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A heartfelt shoutout is due to the incredible individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping both my artistic journey and personal growth. I am fortunate to be surrounded by a multitude of people who provide solid guidance and unwavering support.
First and foremost, my family deserves immense credit for laying a solid foundation for my endeavors. My mom, in particular, has been my number one supporter since day one. Her encouragement has been a constant force, pushing me to stay consistent with my goals and reminding me that it’s perfectly okay to embrace my uniqueness. Her unwavering belief in me has been a cornerstone of my journey.
A special mention goes to my aunt, who has not only been a relative but also a big sister figure. Her relentless determination and constant demonstration that anything is possible with hard work have been a true inspiration. Additionally, my cousins deserve recognition for keeping me on track and offering support whenever I’ve needed that extra push.
My siblings are my daily motivation, serving as a reminder of the impact creativity and hard work can have on those around us. Their presence fuels my determination to strive for excellence in both my artistic pursuits and personal development.
In terms of literary influences, several books have been instrumental in shaping my mindset. “Steal Like an Artist,” “Atomic Habits,” “Relentless,” and “Chop Wood Carry Water” have been particularly impactful. These works have provided valuable insights into creativity, habits, perseverance, and the importance of consistent effort.
While the list of supporters could go on indefinitely, the overarching sentiment remains: I am grateful for the love and encouragement from my family. They are the unsung heroes who have contributed immeasurably to my artistic and personal journey.
