We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Cannon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caitlin, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think it will be to stay true to the thing I’m creating. I’ve been told the right way to do it, and here’s how to make it. I don’t know if any they ever made it, these experts. Seems unlikely, but I doubt it. Maybe because listening to those voices for so long didn’t work, I now find myself in the fortunate position of having less to lose. I think it’s very lucky to be in that position if you want to create things. I think it’s essential actually, that my songs and creations come from that place, whether I have 2 or 200K followers.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At some point along the way, I developed a knack for dealing with life’s pain through humor. While my songs can be very introspective and dense, there’s likely to be a joke positioned in there somewhere. Much of my new music is sexy, vibey and fun! I want younger women and artists to look forward to being in their forties, and to know about the parts of life that actually blossom in this decade (in opposition to the messaging that we shrivel and die here). Women in their forties are hot. And also, we are not just all one thing!

In the last 2 years, I started a program called Beyond Bars in collaboration with The Cultural Arts Alliance and The 30A Songwriters Festival, to teach inmates to write songs. There is a a lot of advocacy for this population in my songwriting. And I can care deeply about making a social impact, and also debut one-minute of sex-comedy on Kill Tony, and sing a song for erectile-dysfunction awareness. You can hear “Love Addict” available on all DSP’s now.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, we would go to coffee at Dose in Old Hickory and take in the view of the lake. Then, to Party Fowl in Hermitage for the fried chicken french toast. But, we’d get a good stroll in on the greenway after that and walk it off. Then maybe to Dee’s about 3pm. No one’s playing, but shouldn’t have to fight anyone for the pool table/jukebox. Then maybe to Adventure Tattoo or East Nashville Antiques for some light thrifting. Then probably Mas Tacos for more carbs. And then honky tonkin’ all night long.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If this were my acceptance speech, I would thank my mother for enrolling me in The Academy for Academics and Arts where they cultivated a belief in me that make believe worlds were very important. I would thank every boy who broke my heart so I’d be compelled to practice my songwriting. A special thanks to every ex-bandmate, whose companionship became a casualty of my clumsy ambition, for teaching me how to care better for people. To my producer, Misa, for sharing his talent with me. To the incredibly generous fans / friends who have given me the support to sustain and take part in my dream. And to the IRS. I don’t know why, I just feel like I should thank them just in case.
