Meet Shanderia Montgomery | Accountant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanderia Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanderia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Humboldt, TN, and my upbringing has been significantly shaped by the influence of my grandmother. As the oldest grandchild, I shared a close bond with her, and she played a pivotal role in molding my character. My grandmother is not only a mathematical genius but has also been the financial backbone of her church for as long as I can remember.
Witnessing her meticulous financial management, I recall boxes filled with files documenting every payment made to those contributing to the church, be it musicians or contractors. This methodical approach to record-keeping left a lasting impression on me. Even to this day, she continues to employ the same method, maintaining a tangible and organized record of all financial transactions.
It was this fascination with her dedication to financial responsibility and meticulous record-keeping that sparked my realization that I wanted to pursue a career as an Accountant. My grandmother’s influence has instilled in me a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to financial integrity – qualities that have undoubtedly shaped who I am today.
What should our readers know about your business?
What I take immense pride in within my business is my unwavering perseverance. Throughout 2023, there were numerous instances where giving up seemed tempting, and I even tried, but each time I bounced back resiliently. My journey to where I am today involved taking risks on myself, investing money with the understanding that success wasn’t guaranteed, and maintaining faith that things would fall into place at the right time. It was undoubtedly a challenging path.
Overcoming these challenges required a shift in my mindset, even when resources were scarce. The realization that I have a son depending on me made giving up a non-option. In the past five years of business, I’ve learned crucial lessons, one of which is not taking things personally. Running a business parallels a marriage; your circle evolves, and you find yourself associating more with fellow business owners unintentionally, similar to how married life alters your social dynamics. Despite these changes, my commitment to operating my business with unwavering integrity remains steadfast, and that’s a message I want the world to know.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When hosting my best friend in the area and aiming to create unforgettable moments, I’d start by bringing them to Soul in Murfreesboro for a delightful dining and drinking experience surrounded by captivating decor, perfect for capturing memorable photos. We’d then head downtown to the National Museum of African American Music, a place I adore. If it happens to be a Saturday and Brad Sativa is hosting his Brunch of Laughs, Zanies would definitely on the agenda! To wrap up the evening with a mix of good music and cigars, our final stop would be Southern Flare for a nightcap.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special mention to Corner to Corner! This community-led nonprofit is actively contributing to meaningful economic growth with historically underestimated Nashvillians by providing knowledge, tools, and networks.
Shortly after launching my business, Corner to Corner gave me the opportunity to address fellow business owners on the crucial topic of bookkeeping for their enterprises. About a year ago, they introduced a mentor program, and I’ve been fortunate to be a part of it. Volunteering with them has allowed me to connect with incredible business owners, offering valuable insights to enhance their understanding of financial matters and contribute to the success of their ventures. Having a mentor myself, the chance to assist others in a similar capacity has been a truly rewarding experience!
