Meet Zeb Sowell | Bassist and Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Zeb Sowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zeb, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think when you pursue something creative, then the work life balance is gonna be fundamentally different from doing something like working 9-5.
Some jobs are very easy to not take home, and some are borderline impossible.
Music especially, of course you take breaks, and there’s downtime, but even when you’re not actively performing or writing it can be kinda impossible to stop thinking about it some times.
It’s not even a downside I’m my honest opinion though. I kind of love the idea that even when my instrument is nowhere near me, my mind could be working out an idea that will hit me later.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I graduated college in December of 2019, moving straight back in with my parents once the pandemic started.
I was pretty convinced that live music was on hold, possibly for the foreseeable future.
Looking back on it, those months in lockdown let me work and save up money to make the move to Nashville, which is the most significant career event for me so far.
I think the most valuable thing I’ve learned is that friction, those times when things feel truly difficult, are vital for real personal growth.
It feels cliché, but in the moment, when things really get hard, to remember that those times are what really make you, then you realize you’re way stronger than you ever thought.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question
First, Hot Chicken from Prince’s for lunch around 12pm
Then we head to East Nashville, check out five points, bar crawl a bit
Then we head to Broadway, catch a band from 6-10, then finish the night with food and drinks at Broadway Brewhouse, to get away from the noise.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My little hometown of Hartsville, SC and the guitar shop that’s there!
Boot, Phil, Brian, Scott, those guys put up with me showing up after school to pester them all the time, and were kind and encouraging to a very awkward kid.
