We had the good fortune of connecting with Wesley Kee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wesley, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I believe internships are key, especially as student. My very first internship was in 2016 with ESPN and still to this day it sparks conversation. Id also say using my mentors in the design industry truly helped me succeed. I have been fortunate enough to have very talented mentors around Nashville that have steered and molded me to be a better designer

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I don’t think my path to where I am is any different than the next, but I have always said that I have been truly blessed to have worked in some of the places that I have in my short career as a designer. I think what sets me apart is my ability to speak directly to a specific audience with my design and art. I think being in the industry as a designer is most definitely challenging while simultaneously being very rewarding. People seem to think all you need is photoshop and other programs and they can do what I and others have spent years still trying to master. And what I take from that is knowing that I have a very specific and niche skill that only a few people can truly recognize. I want the world to know that black creatives and designers exist, especially in Nashville. I want safer spaces for designers of color to be held at the same standard as our white counterparts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take the to the gulch, more specifically biscuit love. That’s where my wife an I went numerous times for good eats. Also can’t go wrong with 12 south, there are plenty of good place to hang and eat in that area as well. Candado Tacos and Emmy Squared are at the top of my list as well. I’m a bit of a night owl so some places to check out at night are definitely Rosemary Beauty Queen as well as Mothers Ruin.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many mentors and people who deserve recognition. I’d start with my professor, Michael Hutzel, creative director at FoxFuel creative. Any time I need some real world advice or just to blow off steam he’s never hesitated to be a call or message away. Another key person, Kay Kirkpatrick was the very first person to give me an opportunity here in nashville in 2015, working under her at the Nashville Public Library downtown, where I created the updated library cards that I believe sr still in circulation. Lastly I’d say Eddy Henry, another mentor and creative director that I’ve had the pleasure to work under. There are no stupid questions when it comes to him. He allowed me the space to be creative in a less than creative field. Of course my wife and daughter who are my motivation everyday
