Meet Trevor Toms | Songwriter, Performer, Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevor Toms and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trevor, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success as an artist running my own business is building a brand that is recognizable, captivating, fun, and unique. There are so many artists that fail to identify and capitalize on what makes them different from the thousands of others seeking an audience. Over the last year I have been working diligently and thoughtfully to create an experience, more than just a series of products, and the audience engagement and feedback has been exciting to watch!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My first album “AmeriF’nKinda” just went live on all streaming platforms and is available on vinyl and cd in stores across the country! This was a project that took over a year to create, develop, and promote. Now for the tour to help disseminate it worldwide. I spent the last year developing my business acumen in tandem with creating the album, and while I still have so much to learn, this project would not have made such an impact if I just put it out there in hopes that it would take me to the next level. This record is not just about the music, it is brand, it is a familiar voice that resonates with people and makes a connection. It takes long hours, lots of energy, and perseverance in the face of rejection, fatigue, and procrastination. The further I go the more I find there is so much more to learn from those around me, and everything that I give, I get back tenfold. I hope that my story encourages others to keep pursing their dreams and keep asking for what they want out of this, beautiful, brief, life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to do in Music City! If I were to take you on a weeklong tour, we would absolutely start with a few concerts on the itinerary at The Ryman, Bobby’s Idle Hour, Musician’s Corner, 3rd and Lindsley, and the Broadway Honky Tonks. Along the way we would get a little hot chicken at Bolton’s, a sandwich and a beer at Duke’s, some Martin’s BBQ, maybe a recession special at Robert’s, some sushi at Bite A Bit, and tacos in Woodbine. The days would be peppered with some of the city’s great museums like the African American Music Museum, The Hall of Fame, and Tennessee State Museum. When the sun was shining, we would take a drive or motorcycle ride down the Natchez Trace or maybe out to Percy Priest for a lake day and some hiking. If we could squeeze it in, we would stop by one of the festivals like Tomato Fest or Americana Fest.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that I owe a debt of gratitude to for my success. My mother used to say “it takes a village…”, and my village seems to grow with each season that passes. From my friends and family in other industries that have helped me develop business plans, to those who have volunteered their time to be in my music videos, to my videographer/photographer who stays up late nights discussing how to turn the vision into tangible products, the musicians that I share ideas with in the recording studio, to my enthusiastic fans, and my supportive family, I have too many people here to list everyone by name. But here are a few organizations: Weems Creative, Freebird Studio, Physical Music Products, Regions Bank, Infrasonic Sound, Bobby’s Idle Hour, The Stillery, Big Machine, Sippin’ N’ Pickin’, Pindrop Songwriter’s Series…
