We had the good fortune of connecting with Tessa Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tessa, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?

One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made was taking the leap to change careers. Career changes are scary at any age, but especially in your 30’s when you have a family depending on you.

I first discovered my passion for tourism while working at Rock Island State Park and Cumberland Caverns. I loved connecting people with new places and experiences. But like many, I chose stability over passion and took a job in banking. It was the practical move, but I never stopped missing the tourism world.

After five years, a pregnancy, and a battle with cancer, 2022 became a turning point. I realized life is too short to not do what brings you joy. Starting over was terrifying, but I knew I needed to follow my heart.

One day, while scrolling through social media, a job posting from the Cookeville-Putnam County Visitors Bureau caught my eye. It was just a part-time role at the Welcome Center, but it was a foot back in the door. I applied, got the job, and within just a few weeks, was offered a full-time position. I was overjoyed. It felt like I had found my spark again.

Outside of work, I’ve always loved promoting our local businesses and sharing adventures through my Instagram, “The Traveling Tessa”. The community’s response to my content was overwhelmingly positive and I was offered the role of Marketing Manager.

Now, here I am, three years later and serving as the Director of Marketing Cookeville-Putnam County Visitors Bureau. It’s been a journey full of fear, growth, and ultimately, fulfillment. And I wouldn’t change a thing!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always had a passion for photography and sharing my work on social media. Traveling, discovering hidden gems, and supporting local businesses are things I genuinely love. I never imagined that what began as a simple hobby would one day evolve into a fulfilling career.

What sets me apart as a Marketing Director is that I’m not just managing content, I’m out in the community, visiting local businesses, exploring outdoor destinations, and creating original content based on real experiences. It all starts with an idea; I bring it to life, then share it through my own lens, using my voice and perspective.

Along the way, I’ve learned a lot about what works on social media and what doesn’t. Without a formal background in marketing and communications, I’ve had to grow my skills through experience. I’ve also taught myself how to build and maintain our websites, something I’m really proud of.

There have been mistakes, lessons, and plenty of growth but each step has brought me to where I am today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the best things about our area is the endless outdoor adventures but for me, it all starts with coffee. I’d recommend kicking off the day at Soul Craft Coffee with my favorite, the Golden Bear Latte, then hit the trails!

If you’re visiting Cookeville, stops at Cummins Falls and Burgess Falls are an absolute must. With over 150 waterfalls in the surrounding area, the options for exploration are truly endless.

After a day of adventure, I’d head back to the Historic Westside, where you’ll find a great mix of shopping and dining. My go-to spot is World Foods for their amazing pizza, shoutout to the crew there! And if you’re craving something sweet, Cream City Ice Cream is just around the corner and never disappoints.

To wrap up the day, I recommend checking out Red Silo Brewing Company. Between the local music and a cold craft beer, it’s the perfect way to end an epic day in Cookeville.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to take a moment to recognize my incredible boss, Shan Stout, for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to grow into the role I have today. I’m also incredibly grateful for the amazing team I get to work with every day, I truly couldn’t imagine doing this with anyone else.

A huge thank you to my supportive husband, who encouraged me to take the leap into a new career and has been my rock through it all. And to my mom, my biggest fan, thank you for all you do and for always cheering me on. I wouldn’t be here without you!
