We had the good fortune of connecting with Tenura Steiner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tenura, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was implanted in me as a child. My parents always told me that every job I work should be viewed as an opportunity to earn the necessary seed money to start my own business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is nonstop from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to bed. Besides the tremendous help I get from my husband, I wear all the hats for the business: production, marketing, social media, administrative, customer relations, graphic design etc.
The biggest challenge is executing all of these duties efficiently, thoroughly and uniquely while still maintaining a joyful vision for the future.
I recently purchased a vintage camper that I am restoring into what will be a unique retail experience for my customers.
What sets me apart is that I make old-fashioned butter cookies like grandma’s teacakes, made from scratch with ingredients you can pronounce. I also make various flavors of delicious, giant chewy, gourmet cookies with my signature butter base.

My Story:
I’m a proud native of Detroit, Michigan. My upbringing revolved around my parents’ family restaurant, where my mom baked, and still sells, her delicious cookies. Growing up, my brother and I used to sell her cookies door-to-door to earn some extra cash.
My passion for baking has been a lifelong journey. One memorable Christmas, when I was 9 years old, I received a cookbook and an easy-bake oven. That ignited my love for creating sweet treats.
As a certified Autoimmune Health Coach, I used to specialize in helping women with autoimmune disorders by using an advanced elimination diet. I guided my clients and encouraged them to make their own sweet treats, to ensure they knew exactly what they were consuming.
So I have several low carb, gluten-free and vegan options for those who have special dietary needs.

One day, my neighbors who own Happy Hatchery Freeze Dried Sweets and Treats, invited me to join them at a local fair. They encouraged me to set up a vendor tent next to them to sell my old-fashioned, homemade, pure butter cookies. To my surprise, they were a hit, and that’s when the Better Butter Cookie Company was born.

Our 1950s theme pays homage to the beloved TV shows like “I Love Lucy,” “Andy Griffith,” and “Dick Van Dyke.” I’ve always been enchanted by the fashion and nostalgia of simpler times.
Life is indeed better with cookies and everything is better with butter! Our old-fashioned, pure butter cookies transport you back to your favorite memories.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My business is very busy…but if I did have some free time …The first thing I would do is take a day trip to Historic Granville. I would have a delicious lunch at the beautiful Wildwood Resort Cafe and catch the Bluegrass Dinner Show at Sutton’s General Store. I would also visit Aunt Bee’s Farmhouse Quilting and Bakery where they feature antique sewing machines and quilts galore, with beautiful fabrics to purchase. I might even take a sewing class..

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Although there have been many advocates along the way, my husband is my biggest cheerleader! My brother, who also shares my entrepreneurial spirit is another valuable resource.
