We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanner Grandstaff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanner, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to risk, I view it as an essential element in both my personal and professional growth. As a Cinematographer and founder of a creative production company, risk-taking is inherent in every decision I make. Whether it’s investing in my education, exploring new territories through travel, or immersing myself in unfamiliar environments to network and build connections, I embrace the uncertainty with enthusiasm.
Taking risks has been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory. It has pushed me beyond my comfort zone, fostering creativity and resilience in the face of challenges. As the Vice President of a non-profit dedicated to fostering community and education in the Nashville film industry, I constantly advocate for risk-taking as a catalyst for innovation and progress.
Every day presents new opportunities to step into the unknown, to bet on myself and my abilities. It’s a journey marked by bravery and vulnerability, but one that ultimately leads to personal and professional fulfillment. I’m passionate about connecting with fellow risk-takers, sharing stories, and learning from each other’s experiences. Through these interactions, I find inspiration and reaffirmation in the shared pursuit of our dreams within the dynamic landscape of the film industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a filmmaker and Cinematographer, my artistic vision is rooted in a deep appreciation for grounded storytelling that delves into the complexities of the human experience. I am drawn to narratives that resonate on a personal level, exploring universal themes through intimate and authentic portrayals.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is the collaborative process, particularly with emerging directors who possess a hunger to carve out their unique voices in the industry. For instance, I recently had the privilege of collaborating with the talented Korean-American Writer/Director, Lee Haneol, on two short films inspired by his life experiences. Together, along with our producer, Jared LaCroix, we crafted a film that recently premiered at the BFI Future Film Festival in London which we were lucky enough to attend.
Currently, I am immersed in post-production for a Hindu short film that profoundly explores tradition and spirituality. Working alongside Directors, Ford Cowan and Rahul Koul, I am so grateful for the opportunity to have captured the essence of this sacred ceremony with authenticity and reverence.
Some of my favorite recent projects have been my collaborations with Director, Cailin Manning. I’m particularly attracted to the way she explores the connection between our identity with dance and movement. Working with Cailin has been a truly inspiring experience, and I look forward to continuing our exploration of the intersection between film, dance, and the human spirit.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in East Nashville and there’s such a vibrant scene that I love to explore. One of my newer go-to spots is Schulman’s, just a short walk from my apartment. It’s a fantastic blend of great music, delicious food, good drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Another East Nashville staple for me is Tower Deli. As a regular there, I’ve developed a bit of a ritual—I always order their breakfast burrito. Call me a creature of habit, but when something’s that good, why change it up?
If you’re a fan of wine, Urban Cowboy is another must in East. I’ve done a few staycations in their custom vintage suites, and it never disappoints. Great live music, decor, and soft lighting for the vibes.
For a dose of cinematic inspiration and community spirit, I always make time for the Nash Film Club, hosted by Luanne Dietz and Jordan Bellamy at Soho House. It’s a monthly event that never disappoints, offering engaging discussions and a chance to connect with friends and meet some new ones.
Of course, no day is complete without a good cup of coffee, and luckily, Nashville has no shortage of fantastic coffee shops. Lately, I’ve been frequenting Steadfast and Elegy, both located in Germantown. Both has exceptional minimal design aesthetics, and they brew a sweet latte.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When reflecting on my journey and the individuals who have significantly impacted my path, I am compelled to give heartfelt recognition to my friend and mentor, Nathan Thompson. Nathan’s influence has been transformative, providing invaluable support, guidance, and opportunities that have propelled me forward in my career.
From the moment I arrived in Nashville, Nathan welcomed me with open arms, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience as a Cinematographer and business owner. Whether over a casual coffee chat or during hands-on sessions at his camera rental house, Contrast Cine, Nathan consistently went above and beyond to nurture my growth and development.
His dedication to fostering community led him to invite me to join the Events and Workshops committee of the Nashville Filmmaker’s Guild. Through our collaboration and shared passion for education, Nathan recognized my potential and entrusted me with leadership responsibilities, appointing me as Vice President and a member of the board.
Nathan’s unwavering belief in my abilities and his willingness to invest in my success have been instrumental in shaping my journey. I owe him a debt of gratitude that words cannot adequately express. His generosity, mentorship, and friendship have been foundational to my achievements, and for that, I am eternally thankful.
