We had the good fortune of connecting with Steffon Seay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steffon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Wanting to have ownership of my work was a key factor behind the process of starting label. Taking all the necessary steps to get the business legitimate was first. Obtaining all the equipment required to get the business going, as well as the software that was required. Once I had all of that taken care of, I knew it was only a matter of time before the work would come in and people would want to work with me even more.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being an independent artist and a label owner is not easy by any means at all. Starting as a teenage artist and working my way up the ladder into a professional career has shown me many things.

Life always throws us curve balls and I’ve had my fair share of them that has put my career on hold for some time. Having to lead more in the family, bringing new life into the world. Even dealing with some of my own personal matters and dealing with mental health has had its effects on my journey.

But being and staying consistent and never giving up has helped majorly. Knowing that I could make it out of the hardships, knowing that the world would fall into place and when the time came, I would be able to give 100% focus back into the music and business.

Let It Be Known is not only a label and a brand, but of course it is also a way of life. Staying true to yourself, your morales and values. Being an example of what to strive to be and possibly better than. Things I’ve always kept instilled in my heart and my mind. It’s wanting to contribute in the world, it’s wanting to leave a footprint and a story for the future. Being free and living in your light as well as shedding some light on those who need shining.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Normally we would go to sports bars and enjoy some food and drinks. Catch up on what we’ve missed from each other. Catch an NBA game somewhere close.

Most of not friends are creators as well, so I’m sure there would be some creative juices flowing and we would collab on some things.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would definitely dedicate it to my family. The time and sacrifice that they’ve given, allowing me to chase my dreams and achieving them, is priceless.

Without their support, I don’t believe I would have the “spirit”” to do so. One thing you need in not only the industry that I’m in, but most industries is the support of your family and loved ones.

From my mother always giving me encouragement, my siblings playing my music and telling their friends who their brother is. As well as my children and their mothers. All have played key roles during my career and without them I’m sure the path wouldn’t necessarily have been an easier one
