Meet Stefano Baldasseroni | Italian Diction Coach and Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stefano Baldasseroni and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stefano, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since childhood, I’ve been captivated by the arts. Even as a kid, I sensed that life without art would lack excitement and purpose. Being around artists and diving into art has always provided me with comfort. I firmly believe that art adds a unique and enriching layer to life, acting as a window into different cultures and ways of living, much like the benefits of travel. It broadens our minds, fostering compassion and empathy towards others.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve secured a notable position in classical music as a diction coach and teacher, guiding numerous future stars through my classes and coachings. What many people may not fully grasp is that my role extends beyond teaching singers how to sound correct in Italian—although that’s a crucial aspect. I find true satisfaction in imparting the understanding that language offers them tools for expression and compelling performance. By mastering these tools, they can evolve into unique artists, not merely imitating others but crafting their own distinctive interpretation of a character.
My background as a drummer has provided me with a distinctive perspective on lyric Italian. I encourage singers to approach any text through the rhythmic lens, fostering consistency and musicality that make their performances both unique and engaging.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d kick off with the holy trinity of Nashville: The Symphony, The Ballet, and The Opera. Nashville’s entertainment scene is so vibrant that you could catch a different show every night. Don’t miss a visit to the City Winery, a personal favorite for music, and spend an afternoon exploring the Frist Museum.
Now, when it comes to dining, the options are endless. For fantastic Italian cuisine, Luogo Restaurant in the Gulch is a must-visit. Follow that up with a seafood experience at The Optimist in Germantown—yes, even in Nashville! If you’re in the mood for pizza, Forno is the go-to spot, with their authentic pizza from Salerno. And for more culinary delights, check out 5th and Taylor and Bastion. There’s no shortage of incredible dining experiences in Nashville!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Numerous individuals have played pivotal roles in shaping my journey—those who saw my potential and guided me in the right direction. Upon my move to the US, Thomas Muraco, a highly accomplished pianist, coach, and conductor, took me under his wing. Recognizing my capabilities, he imparted the essential foundations for success in this field.
Another influential figure was Corradina Caporello, a renowned diction coach, who paved the way for me. She sought an assistant to take over her classes upon retirement, granting me a path in academia.
The support continued with Brian Zeger, head of the vocal department at the Juilliard School in NYC, and Danielle Orlando, then head of the vocal department at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Their recommendations played a crucial role in landing me a job at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. I owe much of my current position to these exceptional mentors.
