We had the good fortune of connecting with Sokeara Chem and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sokeara, why did you pursue a creative career?
The reason behind it all, well from the very beginning i knew a had a knack for esthetics! I was a good student! But I was even better at art and i knew my hands were my talent. As my classmates in esthetician school would tell me, i was a jack of all trades. Makeup, brow & lash enhancements, waxing, facials, you name it. I just had a passion for it, i always learned to improve, i knew i wanted to push myself in it. There was nothing we learned i didn’t have an interest for. I just wanted to be great in all aspects even if I wasn’t going to be labeled as the best makeup artist, I wanted to be known as someone you could go to and trust, and be happy after you left. To gain a personal artist and a friend!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So, long before I even pursed esthetics, i freelanced around different beauty brands and was just a makeup artist. I think what sets me apart from others in the beauty industry is that i didn’t want to just be a makeup artist. I wanted to put a license and certification under my belt. No i don’t just do makeup, I have the skill and knowledge of all beautification of the skin. I want my clients to be able to come to me for it all. I know how hard it is to travel for separate services so i wanted to be able to provide everything. That’s also what i’m most excited about. Now that i have finished esthetician school i’m more than ready to test the waters and just go for it all! Im not scared to be over booked. I want it all! I want everyone to know it wasn’t easy. There were days and months i wasn’t getting booked and felt very discouraged and thought about quitting. I had to remind myself this isn’t just a hobby i liked this is my passion i turned into a career. I want everyone to know that i don’t just want to be a respected makeup artist in the industry, but i am a person with a background of knowledge and I put everything into my craft.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Nashville, the heart of country music! Everyone who knows, knows about how we get down! If someone asked me about the hidden gems of nashville i would say check out east nashville or even the nolensville area! The small boutiques and small restaurants and businesses all around the city are probably one of my favorite things to check out on my off days! Drinks at Sam’s on the water, Grab a bite at the pharmacy burger and parlor, Go shopping and hang out at Tangler outlets or 5th and broadway!! There are just endless amounts you can do in Nashville. From bar hopping, to going to see a live show, and most importantly enjoy the delicious food here, you will not be disappointed!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If i could give recognition to all the lovely people in my life that is apart of my journey i would. But if i had to be personal and deeper i would narrow it back to my mom. I always mention her when people ask why i do what i do. She had a period of time when she was in her cosmetology era. She didn’t end up pursuing it life but she definitely gave me that talent. She’s been my very first client of everything i’ve done. She’s been all to my beauty events. She’s been through it all, from my breakdowns of thinking to quit, to my highest moments of achievements in my career. She’s my number one supporter and i couldn’t have done this without her.
