We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Lynch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sofia, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
The people around me: strangers, friends, loved ones. Listening to other people’s stories is the quickest way to figure out how to write your own. As I’ve grown up, I find myself fascinated with the more mundane aspects of life, and how small events and interactions can change the course you’ve charted for yourself. The last few years have been full of changes and transitions, all set in motion by seemingly small things. I’m a lot more reflective of that in my music now than I have been in the past.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started singing when I was five, and by the time I was twelve, I had picked up a guitar and was playing in any local bar that would let me through the door. My first EP, which came out when I was fourteen, showcased what I felt was the best representation of my life at the time. Since then, I’ve worked hard to develop a sound that is unique but timeless. I don’t want to put out a song that feels like a gimmick, or a trend, but rather work towards building a discography that I’m proud of.
I definitely don’t feel like it’s easy. Following your dreams requires confidence, strong direction, and an affinity for risk. I know that when I choose to release music, there are going to be people who love it, and people who hate it, and people who feel indifferent. It’s not about converting disinterested parties into fans, but finding the people who love what you do and want to support you.
The hardest part is figuring it out on your own. Both my parents are manufacturing engineers, so this industry isn’t something I was born into, and definitely not something I could navigate intuitively. For every success, there’s a few mistakes behind the scenes, and you have to keep moving forward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve lived in Midtown for almost seven months now, and I fell in love with Nashville long before I lived here. This is my favorite way to spend a day in Nashville (or a week, if you don’t want your day to feel quite so busy!)

Breakfast: Coffee at the Well Coffeehouse. (Order their sunrise breakfast burrito and thank me later).
While you’re there, walk around music row and look at all the publishing houses and record labels.

Country Music Hall of Fame: It’s totally worth the ticket price to check out the Country Music Hall of Fame. It’s huge, full of artifacts and outfits and handwritten lyrics; I could spend all day in there.
Afterwards, let’s take a walk down Broadway and soak in the sights, and listen to a little live music.

Lunch: For lunch, we’re headed to I Love Sushi, one of my favorite lunch places in the city thanks to their lunch deal.
After, we’ll go to Centennial Park to see the Parthenon and people watch.

Depending on the day, either before dinner or after dinner, we’ll go to the Bluebird Cafe (get tickets in advance!) and catch a show. They showcase some of the best writers in the city, and if you’re lucky, you can snag a ticket.

For dinner, we’d go to Nada for upscale Tex-Mex, and end the night at Patterson’s with a few drinks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my songwriting professor, Odie Blackmon. I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in May, and in the three years I was there, I grew so much as a songwriter thanks to his mentorship. From introducing me to seasoned writers in the industry to recommending me for showcase opportunities around Nashville, to taking the time to sit down and answer the questions I had about music and life, he was a force of positivity and inspiration (not to mention a legendary songwriter. I feel very lucky to have studied with him. Odie, I miss your class.
