We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaoxiong Song and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaoxiong, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
What draws me most to an artistic or creative career is the ability to consistently share and manifest our ideas. In a way, we’re constantly exporting and crafting our own creations, a privilege not often afforded in many other fields. Even within the constraints of commercial projects, we have the opportunity to develop our own unique concepts within predefined briefs.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In my current role within the advertising industry, I often find myself navigating the delicate balance between artistic expression and commercial objectives. My primary challenge lies in seamlessly integrating my artistic vision into commercial projects while ensuring client satisfaction. I strive to enhance visuals with captivating light and shadow interplays, coupled with dynamic motion graphics, to infuse creativity into advertising endeavors.

What I’m most proud of is my relentless pursuit of artistic growth while continually refining my technical skills and aesthetic sensibilities. Prioritizing elements like fine textures, optimal lighting, and fluid motion not only elevates my creative output but also facilitates client approval. Maintaining this delicate equilibrium between personal expression and commercial viability is a source of great pride for me.

Certainly, the journey to reach this point in my profession has been fraught with obstacles and moments of self-doubt. Questions about my suitability for this career path and doubts about my creativity have often crept in. However, each setback has served as a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. I’ve learned to remain steadfast in honoring my artistic voice amidst challenges.

A pivotal lesson I’ve gleaned is the importance of discernment and self-reflection. Analyzing the work of peers and dissecting the components of compelling imagery has honed my ability to discern excellence and refine my own craft. This continuous process of learning and self-improvement has bolstered my confidence and proficiency in my field.

Ultimately, my aspiration is for my work to transcend mere aesthetics and evoke profound emotional responses. I aim to foster meaningful dialogue, challenge conventional perspectives, and contribute positively to the cultural landscape. Through my creative endeavors, I endeavor to leave a lasting imprint on the world around me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many things to do when you come to New York, with its diverse cultures, amazing cityscapes, and abundance of national cuisines. As a designer, the first thing I would recommend would definitely be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I think for everyone, especially artists, this place will definitely make your visit worthwhile. Also the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is a choice that you can never go wrong with, not only can you see amazing artworks, but you can also buy some nice souvenirs to bring to your family and friends at the moma stores.

There is also a lot of great food; Chinatown and Ktown on 33rd Street are my most frequented areas, with a very rich selection of Asian food. In fact, you can find some excellent-rated restaurants on every street in Manhattan, so it’s great to walk around and choose according to your mood.

In addition to the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, I also recommend taking a ride on the Hudson River Ferry, it’s a great way to see the city!
