We had the good fortune of connecting with Scarlet Paolicchi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scarlet, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I used to work in retail management and I loved it. However, when I had my kids, I knew that I wanted to be able to stay home and raise my kids as my priority. I still wanted to work but I didn’t know what I could do from home.

One day a friend was telling me about her craft blog and I thought, wow that is cool. Then I saw someone on the news that was blogging and doing social media management as a successful business. So I thought to myself if my friend can make a blog, I can do it to. And if that guy can make money off it, I can do that too.

So I looked into it and saw that the upfront costs to start my own blog were fairly limited. I decided to go for it and give it a try since the risks were limited.

I found that I really enjoyed blogging as a creative outlet. I also enjoy the community of other moms that I encountered online. It came to rather naturally and I just kept plugging away at it.

I had no idea how many things there were to learn when I started or I may have been intimidated! However, I am a forever learner so I seem to adapt well to all the changes that have happened in the blogosphere since I started back in December of 2009.

I haven’t figured out a way to turn it into a huge money maker but I have enjoyed a small steady stream of income that has helped with our household expenses. Being able to stay home with my kids was always the goal so I enjoy every day of it!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I created Family Focus Blog to be a resource for other parents. When you kids are growing up, they go through so many stages and it nice to have other parent friends who are thinking about the same things and can share their experiences. It is great to have your questions answered or just know you aren’t alone.

I enjoy my family blog because I didn’t niche down too much. I don’t have to be an expert in one small field. I can share all things family that interest me from family travel to crafts to home decor to parenting and recipes. I enjoy that variety. And it has allowed me to keep blogging over the years.

As my kids are going up and one has gone on to college, I think that will be my biggest challenge of all. I am not sure if I will be able to segway it into an empty nest blog once my son is gone. We will see!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It is so funny you should ask me that because… I have a blog for that! 35 Fun Family Activities In Nashville

But basically, it would depend on the friend. Nashville has so many cool spots for adventure lovers, music lovers, food lovers and more. So it is fun to be able to customize the itinerary to the friend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, one of the most fun parts of blogging has been getting to meet lots of cool people and do cool things. Here in Nashville, I am really glad to have a few blogger friends- Jamie Reeves of Little Black Dress Marketing
