We had the good fortune of connecting with Sasha Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sasha, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are many factors that play into the success of my brand, but there is one in particular that will always be the main factor, God.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pristine Hair Collection is a hair business I started as a junior in college while attending The University of Memphis. I was a struggling college student working three part-time jobs at the time while going to school full-time. Around campus I would receive frequent hair compliments until one day I had the mere thought of selling hair to my friends on campus. I didn’t know what to do or how to do it, I just winged it, Overtime, word of mouth became my biggest form of advertisement and I would see my hair being worn throughout the UC Center, in class, and even around town. Selling hair was only the bare minimum for me. I found a true love and passion in making wigs. I started making wigs by hand and could do it within an hour or so. After about a year, I decided to teach myself how to make custom wigs on the sewing machine, that was the true start of my money making mechanism. I became so glued to the sewing machine I was literally in competition with myself. It would take about 2 hours or so to complete a full wig until I trained and timed myself every time I had to make a new one. Today, I’m able to construct a unit in as quick as 8 minutes. My passion for being a wig artist granted me the opportunity to train girls all over the world. I’ve toured from state to state and I’ve shipped my products internationally as well. Thankfully it doesn’t end there. I launched a product line Summer of 2020 called the Slay Kit which consists of a Soft Foaming Mousse for natural hair (Slay-It,) a hard foaming mousse (Loc’d Down) for clueless wig installs, locs, and edge control, and a wax stick (Top Coat.) November 2021, I released my first curling iron called the 360 rotating iron. This iron is offered in two different barrel sizes for a variation of curls types. October 2023, I released a hot comb which is also a part of the Pristine Heat Collection. I remember dreaming of having my own products and now I’m able to ship them all across the country.

Today, my relatability, custom service and social media presence is what sets me apart from other competitors. My most proud effort is being able to be an influencer. Knowing that I have thousands of followers watching me daily can be both positive and negative, but I’ve certainly had more good days than bad. Sometimes being an influencer causes you to have to tiptoe around certain things because there’s always opinions waiting to be said, good and bad. On the other hand, being a positive influencer and knowing I’ve inspired so many others to do what I’m doing or to pursue their own dreams means the world to me.

My faith in God is how I got to where I am today. I remember graduating from the UofM and landing my first “real” job at Fedex Trade Networks. I was so happy, I felt like an adult. I used the money from FedEx to fund merchandise for Pristine Hair Collection. I remained consistent in my promoting and trying to build a name for myself. Even on the job I sold hair and wigs to many of my colleagues. I found myself many days secretly doing hair business while on the clock, it was all I could think about day in and day out. I told my husband I wanted to leave my job April of 2020, but God said otherwise. I left Fedex January of 2020 and have not had to clock in for anyone to this present day. After only making about $30,000 working at FedEx, I was able to more than triple my income every year working for myself. I gave myself the name, “The Six Figure Chick.”

The fears of entrepreneurship are undeniable, even today. This has been the most rewarding, yet hardest transition of my life. Working at Fedex I was guaranteed a check every Friday, I had insurance, PTO days, sick days, etc. I’ve worked longer and harder working for myself because none of those things are guaranteed unless you work for it.

I overcame a lot of challenges by making mistakes and constantly learning from them. Life is the best teacher, and people will teach you how to treat them. Mistakes will teach you what not to do the next time or what to do differently. I’ve learned to always believe in myself, my dream, and my vision. Others may not understand my vision and they’re not supposed to because God gave the vision to me and not them. Recently, my husband and I welcomed our first born, our son, Baby Q. He has given me another reason to keep pursuing my dreams and providing a life for him that he deserves.

Although, Pristine Hair Collection is the business, SlayedbySasha is my brand, it’s who I am. When people see me I want them to see someone genuine, someone passionate, someone brave enough to take risks and accept the outcome whether good or bad and watch me over come obstacles that may come my way. God will always be the author and finisher of my success story, he is the reason I am where I am today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Memphis is. a beautiful, growing city! I would actually like to explore more of what the city has to offer. But, if my girl friends wanted to hang out I would take them to Sunrise Memphis where you can have some of the biggest, softest biscuits and cheesy grits. I love self care so I would also visit Asia Foot Massage located in Collierville. For some retail therapy, Ross is always my go to. After shopping I’d take them to grab lunch at Venice Kitchen. They have the absolute best crab egg-rolls and pizza choices. Now its time to walk that food down so I would take them to visit Overton Square where there’s more shopping, ice cream tasting, picture ops, and the overall hang out spot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother has been a hairstylist all my life, so growing up hair was all I was exposed to. I even had my first job at the age of 9 years old working in the salon as the salon assistant, or as I like to call myself the salon slave (insider.) As I got older I ran from being a hairstylist because I was in the industry for quite some time and realized I didn’t want to actually pursue it as a career. However, it was a skill I would be able to fall back on no matter what. So, I have to give my mother credit for pushing me to pursue a career I didn’t know I would need as much I do.
