Meet Sarah Somebody | Singer-songwriter, Guitarist, Pianist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Somebody and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I used to play 2-4 hour shows almost every night of the week, and I realized it was taking away from my ability to be creative in my free time. As much as I love playing music, I get burnt out from it. I noticed that I was barely writing or making music in my free time and needed to do something to fix that. I’ve taken a step back and have found ways to support myself with music without always playing shows. Work life balance is important if you want to be happy in this life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m not entirely sure how to articulate what sets me apart. All I know is that I was get told that I do very unique versions of cover songs and have a very true to me style when working on my own music. I just do what feels good, and anyone that does that is bound to find a sound that is authentic.
There were definitely some struggles to get where I am today, but I’m nowhere near where I would like to be. I think that the struggles I’ve had in the past will feel small compared to what I will face as I try to take these next steps and finally start releasing music. What I have struggled with most is having enough confidence to share my art. At one point it was such a struggle to get on stage and share myself and now it’s just a part of my day-to-day. What I’ve learned is that if something is a struggle, I just need to keep doing it until it’s not.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I always take people around 5 Points. So much good food around there. Some great bars like UpDown and Lakeside Lounge, both of which I have spent more than I meant to at. I also like taking people to Centennial or Shelby Park if the weather is nice. It is so pretty here in the fall and spring when the foliage is showing its colors and the temperature is moderate.
Depending on what whoever is visiting me likes to eat and what their budget is, I take people to anything from Degthai to Etch. to Baja Burrito to Gojo. So much good food in Nashville to choose from. Hai Woon Dai in Antioch is also awesome if we end up in that area.
As far as music goes, I take them wherever one of the many talented friends I have is playing.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout the amazing Samantha Funderlich. I met her as the booker for The Row and NashHouse and now know her as a dear friend and greatly appreciated supporter of live and local music. She’s an honest and caring person that works her butt off and deserves the world.
