Meet Sarah Martin | Musician | Singer | Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I was younger I used to go to every open mic that I knew about, most nights I would stay out super late hanging out with other musicians and drinking, and play out as much as physically possible not caring about how much I got paid. There really wasn’t a lot of balance- it was more of a test to see how much my vocal chords and body could handle until it demanded rest by getting sick.
Today at the age of 34, I do open mics once in a while to catch up with friends but I don’t normally stay out late and I rarely drink. When considering compensation for shows, I know that if I play 6 times a week at a lower rate, eventually I will have to take longer periods of vocal rest, risking permanent damage, so I play less and ask for more. I prioritize my worth and experience as a musician, knowing that my goal for my career is longevity, not simply doing the most until I run myself into the ground.
Today I also acknowledge that music isn’t the only important thing and make mindful time for family, relationships, health, personal & financial growth, and outdoor time. As a result I live a happy life in every present moment rather than waiting for a #1 hit to give myself permission to be happy & enjoy my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My mission in life is to leave the world better than I found it. I love to write songs about things that have happened in my life and subject matter that I feel are messages that connect with the world in a positive way and I genuinely just love to share my voice with others.
I believe I have gotten to where I am today by being brave and taking chances knowing that I will be told no and that failure is inevitable along the way. Giving myself permission to ride the rollercoaster has allowed me to overcome the hard times knowing that if I keep going, I will continue to make progress and the only person who could stop me is myself.
I have learned the most in the hardest moments of my life, so I know when I come to a road block, I can make the conscious mindful choice to take notes and keep moving in a forward direction even if I don’t have all the answers.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Plymouth, Massachusetts and it is such a cool spot. A coastal town with live music venues, great restaurants, ocean views, parks, hiking, biking trails, and community events. Main Street and Water Street are the main strips but Morton Park, and Long Beach are just down the road and great for outdoor activities.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I grew up listening to local musicians, including Dan Smith, who allowed me on stage during their shows, my childhood manager Barry Bissonnette, who taught me about professionalism in the music industry, his son Scott who was my musical partner and kept things fun for many years, and also my mom and dad for always encouraging me in my musical path even when I thought it was unrealistic.
I also have so many family members, friends, and supporters who make up such a wonderful community that I am continuously grateful for. They have encouraged, supported, and loved me so immensely over the years- I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of these people.
