Meet Sarah `Bailey | `Percussionist and Band Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah `Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what do you attribute your success to?
One important factor behind my success is constant dedication. Keep working even if it gets hard. If you need to slow down, or even take a break, that is fine, but do not quit. Always pick back up where you left off and keep going.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that I am a classically trained musician, but I also have learned from non-traditional schools of thought as well. I can read music and studied music theory, but I have also learned to follow along by ear and jump in and play without any rehearsal. While it can be difficult to adjust to these different schools of thought, I am very proud of the progress that I have made.
Getting to where I am today was not easy. I struggled throughout college to develop the discipline that I needed to practice consistently. I also tend to be a shy person, so overcoming stage fright was something that I had to work for years to overcome. Even today, I travel hours for a gig and get paid $20. I know it is not time wasted because it is valuable practice time and great networking opportunities, but this can be taxing on my mind as well as my vehicle.
All of this goes back to the dedication factor. Never give up and keep pushing. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely check out Third Man Records. Jack White has done a lot of awesome things for music and is constantly coming up with new things to see.
You can also never go wrong with classics like the Grand Ol Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame, and Centennial Park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this to my family and friends, who have always been in my corner no matter what. They have listened to me cry and struggle, but never told me to give up. I would also like to thank my teachers and professors who never gave up on me and always pushed me to be my best self. Also, my beloved pets, have helped me and given me comfort when I needed it the most.
