We had the good fortune of connecting with Renee Phoenix and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I founded Freak Machine Records with the goal of supporting fellow musicians in advancing their careers. Having been signed a few times myself, I found that existing systems often fail to truly benefit the artists. Drawing from my own challenging experiences in the music industry, I chose to collaborate with a team of trusted individuals to create a more artist-friendly environment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My path has been both lengthy and challenging. Despite harboring some lingering anger, I’m striving to transform my experiences into a source of education for others. I aim to use my journey as a tool through my label to assist and support people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend were to visit, I’d likely check for any local shows happening in the area. East Nashville offers numerous excellent dining options, and among my favorites are Pharmacy Burger, Wild Cow, Joyland, and Hawkers. The options are endless.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been lucky to have a mentor on my journey—Thomas Amason, my writing and business partner. I’ve gained valuable insights from him, learning the art of music composition, band dynamics, and elevating my performance skills. Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of sharing the stage with numerous exceptionally talented individuals.
