We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The concept of starting a business goes back to 1999. I had worked for a company for about 10 years and felt it was time to move to the next level. I was not able to get a promotion, so I started a business. However, I did not know anything about running a business at that time because I did not have a business degree. I was a skilled technician, not an entrepreneur.

What should our readers know about your business?
Paula Anderson Coaching and Consulting, LLC is a professional development and coaching business. The goal is to help healthcare professionals learn about medical coding, leadership, communication and entrepreneurship. Teaching is an art and a science, and I have learned how to effectively transfer knowledge to others.

Higher education is shifting, and I want to ensure that I apply the most effective and transformative tools in my teaching practice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not a Nashville native, but I have been traveling to the city for a few years because my son graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. Two of my favorite restaurants are BrickTops and Slim and Husky’s Pizza. Also, I have traveled there to meet new people because I am a journalist as well and I write about entrepreneurship and business.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In 2016, I was introduced to the Crews Center for Entrepreneurship which is housed at the University of Memphis. As a student, I learned the true meaning of entrepreneurship. Mike Hoffmeyer, former director of the Crews Center and Lisa Threadgill, former program coordinator, created an environment for students like me to develop, take risks and explore entrepreneurship in a creative environment.
