We had the good fortune of connecting with Paige Penney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paige, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. It’s an island on the East Coast of Canada. I grew up in a very musical family. My dad is a songwriter, my mom sings and plays bass and my grandma was a singer. I learned the guitar and started writing songs with my dad when I was seven years old.

I’m so grateful to have started music from a young age. It definitely had an huge impact on me and made me realize that music is something I wanted to pursue as a career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There are many challenges that come with being in the music industry. Having a good support system makes everything a whole lot easier.

I’m lucky to be surrounded by an amazing community of writers and industry folk. I often find myself asking advice from veteran writers and artists.

I also have the best fans EVER.
I have a unique sound and voice.
I incorporate a mix of country, pop, and even rock into my music. It’s so cool to see fans from all over the world listen to my music and support my journey as an artist.

My latest single, SOUTHERN DRAW(L) has country and pop influences. I’ve had people say it sounds like if Morgan Wallen and Halsey had a baby. My goal is to keep making music that turns heads.

I started my career at the young age of 7 and now I’m 20 years old. I’ve grown and learned so much between then and now.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that hard work pays off and the more hours you put into your craft the better you’re gonna get. I live by that rule.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nashville is such an amazing city and there’s so much to do. I take all my friends who visit for smoothies at E+Rose Wellness Café. It is my favourite spot, hands-down. I recommend getting the Blue Bae Bowl.

I suggest that everybody go to Centennial Park. It’s such a beautiful spot in the city. I love going there for a walk.

You can’t go to Nashville without going to see a show! I love watching my friends play the Listening Room Café. It’s such a special room.

I also recommend checking out Café Roze in East Nashville. It’s so cute and the food is amazing!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people in my life that deserve credit for where I am today. My parents deserve the biggest thank you. They helped me jumpstart my career on the creative side and business side. My dad taught me all about the craft of songwriting and my mom taught me how to navigate the business side of the industry .

I’m so lucky to have grown up with amazing teachers. I was a part of the world renowned Shallaway Youth Choir. Being a part of the choir really helped me become a better musician.

I also was fortunate enough to have an amazing guitar teacher, Jean Hewson. She taught me everything about the guitar and made me a great player!

Now I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many mentors in Nashville. Huge shout out to Michael August and Susan Walton for helping me make the move to Nashville.
