We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Jean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is authenticity. I believe that fans want someone that they can relate to. I think that writing songs about real experiences, can help others in their own lives. They want someone that can give them that “aha” moment. I think being personable is also a key to success. I want my music to make a difference.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an award-winning singer songwriter performer. I write and perform for several genres such as Pop, Jazz, Blues, Dance, R&B, Rap, Adult Contemporary, Country, Rock, Metal, and Americana. Most recently, my focus has been Americana/Folk/Country music. I know that we can tell stories in all of the genres, but I find that the best way I can tell a story is through those particular genres. I write social impact music. I want my music to make a difference. I want to be an effective player in life. I think what sets me apart from others, is that I can sing my truth in several languages, English, Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole. I am most proud of my album “Where Do We Go from Here?”. This album deals with climate change, racism, kneeling, my own sexual assault, gun violence, mass shootings, homelessness, etc. This album was my way of revealing myself to the world. The road to my success was not easy. One thing about the music industry is that there are a lot of scammers. I will admit that I was duped along the way. But now, I make sure to do my due diligence and research everyone that contacts me about my music. I’ve learned that working in the music industry is a 24/7 job. I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter what other people think, that you need to remain true to your artistry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Maryland. I am always working and I don’t go out as much I used to. But I would probably take them to “Hawkers”, it is a new Asian restaurant in the area. If we wanted to go out at night, I would probably go to Georgetown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father, Guy Robert Jean, passed away this past April. He was instrumental in my success as an artist. My father was an artist as well. I grew up around music. I always wanted to be just like him. There was song in particular of his that I always wanted to sing, “Nostalgie”. A few years ago, I was able to add it to one of my albums “Lecons D’ Amour”.
