We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Wells and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monique, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Indianapolis, In. My upbringing impacted a great deal of who I am today. I grew up in First Baptist Church of North Indianapolis. I have so many fond memories and met so many amazing people who touched my life during my 22-year membership there. I was raised on 34th & Caroline Ave. which is one of the most dangerous zip codes in the city. Although I grew up a church girl and loved God, I also had to learn how to adapt to my environment because being soft would get you hurt. I adapted a tough exterior to protect the sensitive interior. I don’t fear much in life and I know by surviving my neighborhood I can survive anything life throws my way as long as I have a relationship with God!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am currently a Workforce Development Coach at Goodwill. What sets me apart is that I have sat in the seat a lot of my clients are currently in. I can overstand a lot of the struggles they are going through or have been through. I am relatable and I understand that it is a part of my ministry to be used by God to be a blessing to others daily, even if I get paid to do it. I went back to school at the age of 36. A single mother of 4, I just knew there was more to my life than what I had accomplished at that time. I set out in hopes to be a better example for my children and I am proud of where I am at today. It wasn’t easy doing it alone, but I am thankful for the support of my children and the determination to never give up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely hit up Broadway and hang out a little downtown. I would take her to Opry Mills Mall, and we would visit Slim & Husky’s, Jack’s BBQ, and maybe some other places that have more of a vegetarian option as I don’t eat meat. Tennessee has a lot of beautiful parks, such as Dunbar Park in Clarksville and other areas. There are a lot of things to do in the city. Just depends on the time of year they’re visiting.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely couldn’t be where I am today. I owe homage to my HBCU American Baptist College, my Pastor, Andre Trice, and my mother of course. My children inspire me to be better daily, my Corner to Corner family, my friend Adrienne Bowling, and all my fellow nonprofit owners in the city. Nothing but love for you all.
