Meet Meghan Ondo | Mother and Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan Ondo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meghan, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for Three Sisters Barkery while watching my Grandma’s celebration of life service over a Zoom call. I had to miss the service because my 7 month old daughter had COVID and I could drive to another state to be with my family. While I watched and heard people talk about the woman she was and all that she had done I wondered what I was doing with my life. Being a stay-at-home mom is the best and luckiest job to have in the world but I had always wanted to own my own business. I thought what would make me happy in that moment. At one point I had wanted to own a bed and breakfast at another point and art studio. However neither of those made sense with a baby and almost 3 year old.
So I turned the question to what can my kids do WITH me? I had been baking treats for our dog Talley for 5 years at this point and my oldest likes to help me sometimes. So since my Grandma used to make cookies as a hobby that people loved I decided to make cookies dogs would love.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The thing that I love most about my job is creating new treats. I always find it a little heartbreaking when I go to an event or meet a new customer. That tells me that their dogs can’t have any of my treats because of ingredients. So I asked my customers. What allergies do your dogs have?
Then from there I work with my customers or by myself to create a treat that is unique for their dog. I pride myself on trying to not use the same ingredient in too many of my recipes. Obviously whole wheat flour is a main ingredient, but I do offer gluten-free options as well. However, things like peanut butter I only put into one of my treats considering so many humans have peanut allergies.
So I love messing with recipes and seeing what works together and what doesn’t. Once I’ve got the perfect recipe and get it tested, I love sitting around with my children to decide what unique name. We as a family are going to give the new treat. You can tell my daughters help with things like Peanut Butter Yum Yums or Chicken and Woofles.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay so keep in mind here that I’m a mom and luckily my best friend is a mom as well so she would probably have her kids with her. So I would definitely try to give a mix of things for the kids and for us adults. We might even leave the kids at home with my husband one night.
So of course for the kids we would definitely have to go to the Nashville Zoo and the Adventure Science Center. For the family we would 100% go Gaylord Opryland and probably the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Once we ditch our beautiful kids my friend and I would have to head over to Broadway to enjoy the culture that the city of Nashville has to offer. We are both kids at heart so we would head over Savannah’s Candy Kitchen for sone sweets before dinner at Hattie B’s for some hot chicken. Then we would end our night our dancing at where ever spoke out hearts that night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As stated my Grandma gets the biggest shout-out. Since she is with the angels now though I will give the shout-out to my Grandpa, Jack.
My husband and my 2 girls get the biggest shout-outs for their continual love and support.
Bleu32 in Columbia, TN gave me my first big break with my first selling location.
And finally A Freedom Journey. This rescue brought me the 4th sister of our company and so many opportunities. They support and spread the word of my business and give me a place that I can feel good giving back to. A large part of my clients come from AFJ rescuers and volunteers.
