Meet Matt “W/FRNDS” McCartney

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt “W/FRNDS” McCartney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt “W/FRNDS” McCartney, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
This is a paraphrase on a quote. I heard a while ago and it’s always stuck with me in regards to success. “Something being good doesn’t make it successful, and something that’s successful doesn’t mean it’s good.”
I think a lot of us define success by how it’s perceived by others that can be a slippery slop while trying to find joy in your craft. As long as you working hard, working smart, striving to meet your goals, and FAILING you are already successful.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went to five different high schools while growing up and I think it exposed me to a lot of music genres and styles grow up, and I feel like I tried to infuse all of the artist I’ve loved to listen to over the years into my own sound.
Writing a great song in any genre is fun, exciting and challenging, but I’ve always idolized people who blend genres together to create something new. It’s always these artists and creators who get told that “that will never work”, but When it does, it’s usually the music that shifts the culture forward.
I’ve taken an unorthodox path to Nashville. I know I wish I could’ve moved here sooner, I don’t regret any of the latest experiences. I gained on the way before arriving in Tennessee. I was semi professional hockey player in Canada, played in a festival level touring band, was a large scale music festival manager for one of Toronto‘s biggest music festivals, Managed teams in the industry for Amazon, NBC etc, So We always joke that I’ve lived 1000 lives.
Anybody who works in the creative field will tell you how hard it is to make it, and that’s definitely true. We all share similar hardships but have our own stories, But the thing I’ve learned most through my journey thus far, is being a nice person and working hard will get you further than most things in this world.
What I’m currently excited about is my next single that eases June 14, 2024 called “GOING DOWN TOGETHER”. The vibe of the song is Dua Lipa meets country and I’m super proud of how it turned out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I hate to say it, but my best friends are pretty wild just like myself. I know you’re not supposed to like Broadway when you live in Nashville, but when I have friends visiting from out of town, it’s such a great experience and that’s where we go. It’s also a great place, to not feel judged because everybody is there for the same reasons, to have fun. I love environments like that, I’m not shy to get out on the dance floor so that helps too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents and family have always been my main supporters. Sounds a little bit like a cliché, but for me it’s true. They’ve always encouraged me and supportive of me chasing crazy dreams from professional hockey player to musician, putting on large scale music, festivals, and more.
A bonus shutout to all my friends and collaborators for all the lessons and skills I’ve learned off of them; not only Music but in life.
