We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Huitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I love the Winston Churchill quote “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense.”

If you are passionate about something, chase after it. You may need to re-evaluate what success means but even if it doesn’t become a career, if it’s something you do on an amateur level or as a side hustle, don’t give up. That also doesn’t mean that passions can’t change through different phases of life. If that’s the case I wouldn’t call it “giving up”, just changing course.

What should our readers know about your business?
Huitt Productions is an audio production company that produces high quality “radio ready” songs for artists. I’m proud of the fact that I have the privilege of using the world class talent of Nashville A list musicians when producing a project. Award winning, chart topping, platinum (and even diamond) selling albums, and they give 100% whether they are working on an album for a no. 1 artist or someone that has never stepped foot in a studio. It’s an amazing process and I’m still in awe of it.

It was a long road to get here and not an easy one. First, I had to be comfortable and confident I can deliver a quality product to the client, and that takes time to learn the skills necessary and grow. There were several times a tech issue came up in a session I didn’t know how to fix or a mix didn’t sound great, but I learned, I picked up tips and tricks, ask questions, asked forgiveness when necessary, and when I felt I was at that point, with the continued help and support of Hilltop, I took the leap and started this production company,

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, first let’s start with the food. Sure, there’s the trendy spots like Hattie B’s or Prince’s if you want your hot chicken fix. And in recent years there have been plenty of fancy restaurants that have come to town, and that’s fine, but I like to keep it low key and casual. So for lunch, it doesn’t get much better than Chef’s Market. The meatloaf is amazing and they have a chicken casserole called hot chicken salad (not spicy like Nashville hot chicken) that you can’t find anywhere else. I’m always up for a good burger, and even though it’s a chain and not unique to Nashville, Five Guys is one of the best burgers in town, and Fat Mo’s if you want a monster burger. Rockin Dough is a great pizza/sandwich place if you find yourself on the north side of town.

For entertainment, there’s too much to list. Two of my favorite spots have always been 3rd and Lindsley and Station Inn. 3rd and Lindsley you’ll find all kinds of music and it’s always going to be good, Station Inn is a legendary bluegrass spot. For songwriters there are writers nights everywhere, literally everywhere in Nashville and the surrounding areas. Of course there’s the Bluebird Cafe, I always love going to The Listening Room to hear writers rounds, but almost every bar or coffee shop has a little stage where you’ll find artists trying out new songs (and possibly a number 1 hit someday). Beyond the music, Nashville has also become quite the sports town. Titans football, Predators hockey and even a brand new soccer stadium, so there’s always something to do here, even an underground speak easy style magic show.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The manager of the studio I work at, Hilltop Studio, John Nicholson gave me a chance when I had no idea what I was doing as an audio engineer.
