We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Hoskins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I did not want to be a one book author, so from the onsite, I decided to establish a independent publishing company, C&V 4 Seasons Publishing. I established C&V 4 Seasons Publishing in December 2014.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Following graduation from Philander Smith College, I worked for a record company, TV station, and Congressman Vic Snyder with U.S. House of Representatives. Following Snyder’s retirement, I landed a job with the Department of Justice and retired from it in December 2022, after 21 years of federal government service.

Since retiring, I get to enjoy sharing her stories full time, volunteering, and caring for my family. I love reading my books at schools, bookstores, and libraries, and sharing my experience as a businesswoman and publisher to tell children all that is involved in producing a book, as well as sharing my stories in a fun, and interactive way to help students learn, as they enjoy reading.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to/ share Arkansas History with my family and friends that visit from out of town. I would take my guest to the Central High School National Park Service, to learn about the 1957 Desegregation of Central High School and Intergration. Next stop would be the Clinton Library, Mosiac Templers Cultural Center, and Pinnacle Mountain State Park. We would also experience Arkansas Fried Catfish, and many delicious foods in Arkansas. A trip to Arkansas requires a stop by my mom’s house and tutoring Center to view some historic pictures of the YARN Center and our family history.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out to Arkansas Schools, Libraries, Bookstores and many other retailers for sharing my stories with students and families. I would also like to give a special shoot out to each book illustrator who created beautiful art that brings my stories to life.
