We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Gurule and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcus, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Working with baseball gloves was a hobby. I served in the Army for 22 years with multiple combat deployments. Leather work/repair was something to help with combat stress and a hobby to kind of help me relax. Turned out I was pretty decent at it.

What should our readers know about your business?
I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to get consumers to try a new brand of baseball gloves. It’s very difficult, to create something that sets you apart but also performs the way folks want it. In many people’s minds, a lot rides on the performance of their baseball glove, at the competitive level. I’m very proud of where we have come at Emery. Nothing has been easy, nor will it be easy. As niche as this market may seem, it’s very competitive and players want a product that performs but also looks cool. We offer both. Something I’d like people to know about our brand is that the same level of care and attention I put into our MLB pro player gloves, that you see on TV, is the same level and care we put into every glove. I doesn’t matter if you’re a 12 year old little leaguer or our star player in the World Series.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live outside Nashville. So I’m not crazy familiar with the usual spots. But we always stop at Martins BBQ. If Vandy baseball or the Sounds are playing we try to take all our friends to see them.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife and son. They are very supportive and helpful. The industrial machinery required for make a baseball glove isn’t cheap, as this developed and grew, she was always supportive. And my son is my best shop hand, always helpful and always excited to see what we’re working on.
