We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Becker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leslie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Honestly, I think my creative career chose me…and I fought it all the way. I was always creative but also had an entrepreneurial spirit and a business mind, so I struggled to know if I was supposed to be on the business side or the creative side. In college I had to serve an internship at an ad agency (my degree is in Advertising) and at the end of the internship, they offered me an account executive position (something they never offered just out of college and definitely a suit, not a creative). It was at that defining moment that I drew a line in the sand. I was honored they offered me the job, but I said “No thank you…I’m a creative.” They were shocked that I’d turn it down but refused to look at my creative work. And I decided right then that I would never work for anyone else because I didn’t want to be put in a box. Since I had both the business and the creative skills, I started my own freelance copywriting business and that’s when my creative life officially began.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s been decades since I’ve been in college and now that struggle between my business side and creative side has been the best gift of my life. I had a beautiful 24 + year career as a Broadway actress in NYC, wrote a bestselling book “The Organized Actor” to help other actors succeed as well. I’ve had two musicals I’ve written produced, my debut single hit #4 on the AC Billboard/Hot AC chart and I recently celebrated my 100th episode of my podcast–Unstoppably Creative. I guess you could say my love for both business and creativity has paid off. I honestly don’t say any of that to impress you, but to impress UPON you that when you decide what you want, you believe it’s possible, and go out and do it..you can make anything happen. I think what sets me apart is I’m not afraid to go after what others feel is impossible. When I get passionate about something, I go for it 100%. And I’ll be honest, as a creative I’ve had several different seasons in my life when my energies have gone to certain parts of my creativity. I used to think that having so many creative gifts was a curse. But I’ve learned what an incredible blessing it is! I’ve been able to use my creativity is so many wonderful ways. Right now I’ve got three things I’m focused on. 1) Continuing to grow my podcast following 2) Getting my new musical produced 3) Flipping furniture–my newest obsession! And of course, you’ll still catch me singing out at songwriter nights here in Nashville. For me… I want the world to know that you have more possibilities waiting for you than you can ever imagine and you’ve just got to go for it!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I live in Music City, it’s impossible to come to Nashville and not go to downtown Broadway. Youv’e got to experience it at least once. And whether you love that kind of scene or not…you’ll never forget it! While downtown, I probably choose to eat at Blus Sushi Saki Grill in the Assembly Food Hall and by day, definitely take in the old vintage charm of downtown Franklin, TN. It’s like walking into a Hallmark movie and every time I go down there (especially when it’s Christmas time) I’m reminded…oh yeah! I really want to write a Hallmark movie. Once a creative, always a creative!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh how I love this question! So many people have helped me on my journey. First and foremost, I couldn’t start this list without calling out my own mom (even though she is no longer with us). I think if I hadn’t had her as a mom I would have had an entirely different life. In fact, she recognized my creative gifts early on and even when I lacked the confidence and often opted for the practical, more structured side of life, she always encouraged me to continue pursuing my dreams. She left this earth seven years ago and honestly, life hasn’t been the same since. I’ve also always had a passion for self=development and the human condition so I have many mentors and organizations that have stretched my mind in amazing ways including Tony Robbins, Landmark Education, Malcolm Gladwell and more. Many books and extended education for growth.
