We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Gregory and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I have found that when I take a creative risk, it tends to work out well. Whenever I feel mysteriously driven to create something that makes me feel deeply uncomfortable, or if the thought of exposing a certain side of myself to my viewers makes me squirm, that generally means that I am striking a nerve that will resonate with others and that I should go ahead and take that risk.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am probably most well known for my method of stop motion animation with oil paint, and I’ve been lucky to create animated music videos for a lot of musical artists and record companies over the last 15 years. However, my other passion is quilting, and I have really leaned into this side of my practice since the beginning of the pandemic. I am super excited to be included in an upcoming group show at the Frist Museum in which I will get to showcase both sides of my work, animation and quilting. The show is called In Her Place, and it opens in early 2026.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a creature of habit, and I like to do the same things over and over. I would definitely take them to Roberts Western World to see some music, and then would follow it up with a meal at Arnold’s Country Kitchen. In the evening, we’d go to the Village Pub to drink beers and play dice. In the morning, we’d go to Monelle’s for brunch, or maybe Loveless Cafe. If they were here on a Tuesday night, I’d take them to the American Legion for some line dancing. I would also have a little bonfire in our backyard so they could meet all of my awesome Nashville buddies.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to the women of the Red Arrow Gallery here in Nashville, Katie Shaw and Ashley Layendecker. These ladies have offered endless support and love to me since I arrived back in Tennessee. They’ve not only created a cozy home and a place of community and encouragement for countless artists here in Nashville, but offer opportunities for southern artists to exhibit and grow in the broader global art world. I love these badass women!
