We had the good fortune of connecting with Kory Shore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kory, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I internally laugh when people talk about work life balance. It’s a very black and white way of thinking. Something that our culture has mastered. This or that, never BOTH!

Balance is not a state of being, it’s an INTENTIONAL and ACTIVE practice. The intention is guided by a compass of values. The action is the keeping those values in mind every day and structuring your tasks each day to meet those values. During my morning routine, which involves thanks, affirmations, and meditation, I consider the end. I am going to die one day. So I imagine death-bed Kory looking back on his life. What regrets does that Kory have? What is he proud of accomplishing? Who in his life does he wish he spent more time with? For me, I work to avoid the regret of losing life to my anxiety and worry, allowing fear to stop me from leaping, and missing valuable time with those I love under the guise of “being too busy”. I want death-bed Kory to look back and smile, see the impact his work has done for people he’s never met, know that those he knew walked away from each interaction better than he found them, and that he owned every second that this world has given him. I want that Kory to be ready for whatever comes next. Keeping the end in mind is a very visceral and clarifying experience that will quickly make known what you genuinely value. And that will provide a compass for how you “balance” your days.

On a normal day, I say that like every day isn’t entirely different. I rise at 7, get some movement in, meditate on affirmations and thankfulness, consider my values, and then mindfully eat. I do my best to focus on one thing at a time. If I am writing, I am present to the feeling of the plastic keys pressing against the pads of my fingers as I type. If I am playing COD with my friends, I give myself PERMISSION to play without guilt.

Balance changes second to second and has infinite form depending on the person balancing. Engaging in it is a disciplined skill that is incredibly freeing and rewarding.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m not afraid to say what I think, and my music reflects that. If you like Bazzi, Jon Bellion, Alec Benjamin, AJR, then you’ll like my music.

I believe everyone should live like an artist. That doesn’t mean pursue the arts as a career, that means interface with the world like an artist. Question society, embrace their inner child, have fun, cry till your lungs burn and laugh till your abs hurt, and most importantly LIVE the way YOU WANT TO F****** LIVE.

Nothing worthwhile is easy. A healthy marriage, successful career, maintaining a vibrant friend group. But the stress is far better than working a job I hate and spending my disposable income on alcohol and dissociating from my pain by consuming TV for hours on end.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an art fanatic so I love the Frist Art Museum and going inside the Parthenon to see what exhibit they have up. I also love reading and drinking coffee. There’s a really great spot in East Nashville called “The Book Shop” that connects to a coffee shop. So when it’s time to get a new book I’ll buy one from there and then walk over get a coffee and read. My other favorite coffee spot is called “Americano Lounge” in the Wedgewood/Houston area and it takes me back to my days living in LA.
