We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimathi D. Street Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimathi D. Street, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
One way that My business , as a Doula and Lactation Counselor, helps the community by helping my clients with advocating for themselves. This, in turn, teaches them how to advocate in other aspects of their lives. Their children then, hopefully, grow up with this same knowledge.

What should our readers know about your business?
I love working as a community Birthworker to help fight against the high maternal morbidity and infant mortality rates here in our city. I tailor my care to each client and their needs. I do not believe in providing a cookie cutter style of care to people with very unique circumstances and lives. Over the years, I have started virtual support groups as another way for networking and connection. The support groups are for NICU Parents, Breastfeeding Moms, and Birthworkers. I have learned that communicating, and linking up, with people that have similarities as you can give a sense of community and hopefulness.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to Cozy Corner. That is my favorite bbq spot. I also love pho from Green Bamboo!! The Slave Haven and Civil Rights Museum are places that everyone should visit at least once. My favorite little boutique is Shop Mucho. I love colors and the shop is so very colorful and welcoming. The best cultural shop in the city is Mbabazi House of Style. I love Novel just to walk around in and to grab some cute novelty gifts.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Thanks to my mom for passing down the “entrepreneur gene”. She was always doing something other than her “regular job”. She also got me started on my first business when I was 11.

I am thankful to my little family for supporting me through all of the unconventional meeting times and on call hours.
