We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my professional journey in education and truly believe that my purpose is to inspire and educate others. I chose to leave the classroom to pursue a career in software engineering and have worked in tech for the last 7 years. I started Learning Leaps in 2020 as a way to remain loyal to my purpose in education and I started the KellyCreative brand as an outlet for my creativity.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Learning Leaps started as a side hustle, I would tutor children in math in the evenings after work for extra money. Over time this work stopped feeling purposeful and I felt that I could make a bigger impact. Since 2020 Learning Leaps has grown into a company that focuses on building mental resilience through programs that combine physical fitness with numeracy challenges. I have searched high and low for a company that does what we do and I have yet to find one. In 2024, to come up with an original idea seems impossible, I’m very proud of that. I am excited about being a leader and pioneer in this space. I am also proud of the fact that my team is able create programs that can have such a dynamic impact on a child. We all know that everyone needs mental resilience in the world we live in. I am taking two things that require mental fortitude, math and exercise, and using that to build a child’s confidence and grit. I compare my entrepreneurial journey to my personal/spiritual journey. Everything that I am in business mostly mirrors everything I am in my personal life. It has not been hard to build a business per se – there is an abundance of tools at my fingertips to make it easy. What has been hard is riding the waves of doubt, motivation, economic shifts and overall trial/ error. I want parents to know that children need healthy challenges that build their character and resilience. Learning Leaps offers a safe space for children to experience rigor and be coached through it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that I credit for my personal and professional development. I credit my parents for nurturing my strategic thinking and entrepreneurial spirit. I credit my early elementary school teachers, Tameka Franklin particularly, for setting me on fire in the classroom – I believe this is where my heart for education was birthed. My path in education was strengthened by the leadership development that I received through the Peer Power Foundation. I thank Dorothy Northern, my high school art teacher. She is the reason I continued to pursue art in College which has led to me becoming a professional artist. I credit tech901 and colleagues/mentors that I met while transitioning to tech from the classroom – they made all the difference as I developed my skills in the first 1-3 years of my software development career. I thank my sister for being a sounding board for my business ideas , she has been my someone ” who gets it” and has believed in my vision since the moment I spoke about Learning Leaps.
