Meet Keagan Denney | Kaégan – artist & musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Keagan Denney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keagan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I felt like it was something I was supposed to do. I grew up as a rather introverted kid, but along the way something shifted in me that made me want to connect with people. Music is one of the fastest ways to someone’s heart. You can really tell a lot about someone by the music they listen to.
I want to share hope in the songs I write. I believe it’s important to acknowledge that life will always have its ups and downs, and for me, it’s very easy to get stuck on the things that go badly. If I deal with that, I’m positive that others do as well. So I want to write music that makes people think, “Oh yeah, I’ve been there before.” and then provide hope as an answer!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Christian artist that wants to keep my music down to earth but not of it. I believe that my songs are written in a way that many can connect to and enjoy!
Getting to this level wasn’t easy. It came with many co-writes, rewrites and soul searching sessions. Something clicked about 2 years ago when I realized why I want to write. It all came back to connecting with people.
When it comes to my brand, I want people to feel like they not only the ability to connect to my music, but connect to me. My story is theirs and they’re just as much a part of it as I am.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m 100% not the best tour guide, but I’d definitely take them to downtown Franklin. We’d have to visit the factory and eat at either Mojo’s tacos or Hattie B’s.
If it were a long weekend trip, we’re going to Gatlinburg, TN. There’s so much to do there, but knowing my family, we’d take them to Dollywood. Great music, great rides, great food and overall a great time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a plethora of people to give credit to! My brother always says, “We are a sum of our parts.” And I couldn’t agree more.
My mom and dad always encouraged me and my brother to explore and create. Whether that was via music, drawing, painting, or coming up with characters and stories while we played outside, they wanted us to dream. They’re the reason I keep dreaming and keep working hard!
My mom and dad noticed a talent for songwriting back when my brother and I were only 13 and 15. During our travels from state to state, my mom had us meet with a family friend named Geron Davis. We met Geron at his home in Tennessee and he had us sit down with him and sing some of our songs for about 2 hours. He asked some pretty world bending questions that I wasn’t able to completely answer then. I was young and had a very specific idea of what a songwriter was supposed to be and do. I was also too young to realize that those few hours would change my life forever.
Geron connected us with another one of our current mentors, Joel Lindsey. Just like Geron, Joel has been known for his songwriting skills for years. We’re talking multiple awards, multiple #1s on the radio and so much more accolades than I could even keep track of. These two invested in me and I would not be who I am without them
