Meet Katrina Leggett | Artist & Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Leggett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katrina, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Early last year my self confidence took a hit, after completing a ceiling mural the client refused to pay. Tired from the physical work, I began to second guess myself and so began my creative block. Had I reached the end of what I wanted to accomplish? Instead giving up, I slowed down, continuing my daily practice allowing myself to take up space. I committed to one show a month and had a productive and year. I found joy my creations meet their true owners. One a girl purchased painting of dog that reminded of her recently lost pet, another was her husbands favorite chair, or finally her mother watching over her from heaven. Knowing that my work builds connections is the fuel to continue on my creative adventure.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work with acrylic and watercolor allowing the paint to flow loosely across canvas in bright colors and high contrast. My paintings are dream-like, a moment between memory and reality and memory just enough of something recognizable yet transforming into something more surreal. Like being drawn into a show midway, not knowing the characters or what happened before but seeing clearly that one moment before switching shows never to know exactly what had happened before or after leaving it open to interpretation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A trip to Memphis with my friend and family would start with thrift and antique stores, my favorite is the Salvation Army on Kirby Whitten and Abandoned Treasure in Millington. Then to the Metal Museum and bass pro shop lookout at sunset. I also want to go the zoo and botanic gardens We would probably have to stop by the new tennis center so my 16 pro can show off his mad skills. Hopdoddy is where he takes all our visitors but my go to is gibson’s donuts. Finally we need to catch a live show at any of our excellent venues.
