Meet Katie Tyler | Muralist & Fine Arts

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Tyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Because that’s all I knew deep down in my soul I was meant to do. I never seen myself doing anything else, but that. And I strive to learn every thing I can every day and to create daily for as long as I’m able.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a hard time as a creative to niche down in one subject or style. I have tried for years to find that one thing that I can’t stop creating and I never found it. And I’m OK with that! You constantly hear other people say you should have a style, that when somebody sees your work they know it’s immediately yours. Yes, that would be nice to do but I get bored of things being similar. I think it’s mostly the way I was raised, with a really strong grandmother, who, in my eyes knew how to do everything from painting, to sewing to cooking to gardening and because of that, my father, you would consider a ‘Jack of all trades’ which I definitely feel I inherited. I love to draw and paint. From wall murals to painting on saw blades, I’ve even painted on feathers! I like to try new outlets to make life interesting. The subjects I’m drawn to are flowers and animals. Luckily with my career as a muralist in middle Tennessee, it has allowed me to take my skills to big walls and I am so thankful I get to do that as part of my career!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I have been living in middle Tennessee for three years now. I came from a small world town in upstate New York, where the art community really lacked in my opinion and I just needed a change so we move to another small town but within an hour and a half away from Nashville. So if I had the change to go into Nashville on my time off with friends I would definitely take them to see the nations area. I recently did a mural job on a rooftop for an Airbnb in the nations, and this was the first time I’ve ever gotten to that side of town and as I’m painting, I glanced up and I see the gigantic mural on the abandoned grain silo. I’ve seen this on social media but to see it in person was breath taking. That’s where I would start. I believe everyone should have a chance to see not only that but any public art until you find something that resonates with you. So for me a good fun day in Nashville would be just to see the opportunity for creatives in the area. The food and the music and the art! Everything that makes somebody that is creative, Have the ability to do what they love every single day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve done a couple other interviews where I have acknowledged everyone that has pushed me throughout my life, especially my art teacher in high school who, without him I wouldn’t have had the courage to apply for college and be where I’m at today. In writing this, besides my parents, my husband has been the one constant in my life from the start who has always pushed me to succeed and get what I’m worth for my talents and time. He’s the backbone to my career. We push each other towards our goals and never let each other fall.
