We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Power and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to carve out a space for myself. I love writing, but wasn’t finding a lot of opportunities to share my taste and my favorite music. The idea for Music Marble came about when I realized how much I loved writing music reviews and how much I knew I wanted to get more involved with the independent music community. It has been a long time in the making. I learned how to build and run my own website, how to brand it, even coming up with a simple -never been heard of- name is not as easy as it sounds. Music Marble got its name from the idea of “featuring music from all over this big blue marble.” I did not want to confine the music to one spot. I know there are amazing artists all over the world!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music and words have been a through point in my life. I have always found a way to incorporate them whether it was short stories about singers, songwriting, or most recently music reviews. I think what sets me apart is how clearly I live and breathe music. I went to Belmont University and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Songwriting and a minor in Creative Writing. Writing is something I felt came easy to me, and I have been able to continue to grow my skills doing what I love. I learned that the music industry can sometimes be a tricky place when it comes to ownership, and I have been drawn more to being independent and having a platform to showcase other independent musicians alongside larger signed acts. I am so excited to be a place artists and people alike can go to discover their new favorite music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Nashville for dinner one night we would definitely go to The Grilled Cheeserie! They have some of the best sandwiches and shakes. Jeni’s is also a must-do, their waffle cones are delicious. The cool thing about Nashville is all the music and museums. Country Music Hall of Fame and Musician’s Hall of Fame are super cool and you definitely can spend a couple hours in each. The Bluebird Cafe is another iconic spot and is worth the wait if we can get in, if not Song Suffragettes at The Listening Room also puts on an incredible show. It is a writer’s round that highlights female country singer/songwriters and they share such beautiful songs. There is so much to do I don’t think we’d fit it all in a week long trip!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporter is my dad. I remember when I first started college he set me up with an LLC for my business. Music Marble is under “Plan A Publishing, LLC.” Plan A Publishing got its name by my Dad and I saying my dreams were always Plan A and I didn’t need a plan B. So I agree it is invaluable to have support from your community and loved ones, especially when you are running your own business.
