We had the good fortune of connecting with Jye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jye, what principle do you value most?
Wonder. Followed closely by Community. Sharing experience has been my primary struggle and desire in life. Art has given me a way to communicate that gets directly to the point. I found many wondrous things in the world, and want to experience them with others. I have found this wonder even in very difficult circumstances.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a community-taught artist, learning a great deal online, from others, and reading many books that talk about the philosophy of art. I just told as many people as I could regarding my intention to become an artist. The reaction was something along the lines of “we already knew this about you”. I learned that most late-blooming artists who go on to do great things feel that they are not artists, but are looking for the magic key to become one. I gave up looking for the key and just started painting. I think if a person has the desire to be an artist that just doesn’t leave them alone, that’s all the qualification they need.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
While I lived in Nashville, I would include the art market at Taylor Street Art Market or the WeHo art crawl. It’s where I met so many friends and I think it is connected to the heart of Nashville culture. I would take them across the pedestrian bridge and walk with them or bike with them through downtown. I would likely take them to a show, as there are so many venues. I especially enjoy East Nashville, and I would likely take them by the trainyard near the river. It’s this big industrial area, but you can see these old trains from the road. I like industrial settings that are partially eaten by nature.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to Jenn Cater. https://www.instagram.com/thejcatershop/ Queer business owner who specializes in jewelry and is a founder of Nashville Curiosities Collective which holds a biannual event for queer, curious, creative creatures who want to find their community. Jenn invited me to her art market and has been a critical part of my artistic life to this day.
