We had the good fortune of connecting with Justvibez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JustVIBEZ, what inspires you?
Some of my inspirations for me producing are: Common, J Dilla (Jay Dee), Pete Rock, Organized Noize, UGK, Curtis Mayfield and Isley Brothers. I can go for days but if I had to stick to simply my influence of my sound then those are the key names for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So I moved to Nashville, TN back in 2010 to go to school at the Art Institute and that’s where I met my first crew “QMP x DTM” which stood for Quiet Mind Productions and Determine to Make It. At the time I was an active rapper/producer that went by the name, Positive Vibe. In 2017, I decided to change my name to VIBEZ (then eventually stamping the name, “JustVIBEZ” in 2020, shout out to my daughter’s mother for the title) because music to me hits all areas in life: the good, the bad and the ugly. So I wanted to be able to freely create a soundtrack for any of those times without putting myself in a certain box. In the words of Big K.R.I.T, “if it don’t touch my soul, then I can’t listen to it” and that has been the main assignment when it came to creating music, always deliver something that people can FEEL. I stopped rapping at around 2017 because I found myself just enjoying being in the background more and creating the canvas for the artist to paint their own story. As always, the journey hasn’t been easy especially dealing with depression and anxiety but the music has always been my therapy (along with ACTUAL therapy). My key assignment is to continue creating soundtracks for the world to connect to, feel and hear.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend is a foodie, music lover and laid back person just like me so most definitely taking them to Grimey’s to go crate digging while also hitting some nice spots to eat such as Bolton’s, Prince’s, Kool Runnings, Slim and Husky’s or any places like that. I love finding a local show with some Hip-Hop, R&B, even a nice alternative artist to vibe to while drinking and enjoying the night. Local Hip Hop shows are usually the places where I am able to be free, network and be exposed to great music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family always first and foremost. Most definitely want to show love to my big inspiration, my daughter! Also to my brothers from my last crew QMP x DTM and my brother Mikey Black. My brother, Negro Justice for shining a brighter spotlight on the music and creating two incredible back to back projects. Six One Tribe for letting me help shape the sound of the Nashville Hip-Hop scene. Heru Heru/Heal Hop, The Elderz, E.T. and so many of the Nashville artists that I have been blessed to create greatness with. This could go on for days because every person has played a part in some way.
