Meet Julie Lavery | Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Lavery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie, how do you think about risk?
I didn’t realize how risky a career in music would be when I was younger. I was so certain that I’d “make it” early on that I never considered an alternative. As I was met with rejection, hurdles, having to work multiple jobs to pay the bills etc, I realized that I had chosen one of the riskiest jobs in the business. I’ve had a few moments of uncertainty but I’m stubborn, tenacious and persistent. I remind myself that life is short and pursuing something that I love is worth it. Also, to decrease the “riskiness” I am always practicing and trying to improve. I like to push myself. I feel lucky that I’m able to pursue this career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love the art of songwriting and as an artist I feel that it’s important to capture the time that we’re living in. I don’t shy away from the dark subjects and I like to write it like I see it. I’ve always been inspired by the protest songs of the 60s and 70s. That music really made a difference and I try to emulate that in some of my songs as well. I want my listeners to know that they’re not alone. We’re all living through the same time and I think it’s important to have an open discussion about it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I have family and friends in town I usually try to avoid Broadway haha. My perfect day for them would be going to Nelson’s drum shop for a Weak coffee and then grabbing a bagel at All or Nothing in the parking lot. Then we’d go to Peeler Park for a walk. After we’d head to Garage Sale for some thrift shopping and end the night at Attaboy for a cocktail and Lyra for dinner. Maybe if we’re up for it, Sid Gold’s for some karaoke!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shout out to my husband and producer Spencer Broschard.
