Meet Juan Pinero Russo | Juan Russo Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Juan Pinero Russo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have learned that taking bold risks in pursuit of a better future is not just a choice — it’s a key element of growth. Throughout my journey in the United States, I encountered many obstacles and setbacks, but each challenge became a lesson that pushed me to evolve. I strongly believe that we cannot achieve our true potential if we remain in our comfort zones. Change is often uncomfortable, but it is also where transformation begins. By embracing uncertainty, I’ve found the strength to create new paths and build a life aligned with my values and ambitions.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Originally, I studied architecture in Venezuela while also taking courses in realism and illustration. Unfortunately, I was forced to abandon my studies during the ninth semester and flee the country due to political persecution and the worsening national crisis. Upon arriving in the United States, I had to pause my artistic development for several years.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I became seriously ill, and that turning point made me reflect deeply on my purpose. I decided to prioritize my true passions and dreams, leaving behind factory work to fully dedicate myself to tattooing. I began this journey at a studio in Miami, where I met many inspiring artists. Through that experience, I quickly realized that every artist has their own approach, and if I wanted to succeed, I needed to become versatile and able to adapt to different styles according to each client’s vision.
Eventually, I moved to Memphis, where I was fortunate to find success from the very beginning. I became one of the few artists in the area with the flexibility to combine and master a variety of styles — from fine line and realism to watercolor, portraits, floral work, anime-inspired designs, and even bold styles like trash polka. This adaptability has been a key factor in my growth and recognition as an artist in Memphis.
I firmly believe that my background in architecture and academic drawing played a crucial role in shaping my approach to tattooing. It gave me a strong foundation in composition, structure, proportion, and visual storytelling — skills that now translate directly into every piece I create on skin. That training continues to influence the precision, balance, and creativity I bring to my work today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
⸻
“Honestly, I haven’t had the chance to explore much yet, as I’ve been focused on building my business from the very beginning. However, if someone were to visit me, I already have several places in mind to show them. First, the various camping parks — I believe Tennessee has truly beautiful nature. Second, the food — you can find all kinds of restaurants on every corner. And the view from the Memphis Pyramid is absolutely stunning.”
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to first acknowledge God for always guiding my steps and showing me the way during the most difficult moments. In January 2025, I lost my beloved dog, Pepita. Despite her small size, her unconditional love taught me powerful lessons about compassion, empathy, and respect — not just toward people, but toward all living beings. I’ve come to understand that strength and comfort can come from the most unexpected places.
I am deeply grateful to the family and friends who supported me from the very beginning, especially my brother, who allowed me to practice my first tattoos on him — a gesture that marked the start of my journey. I also want to express my sincere appreciation to this beautiful country, the United States. I arrived here with nothing, fleeing fear and persecution during Venezuela’s most difficult times. Here, I found safety, hope, and the freedom to dream. This country embraced me, and through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, it has shown me that achieving my goals is truly possible.
